Establishing a Collaborative System for the Protection and Utilization of Underwater Cultural Heritage at the Takashima Underwater Site through Cooperation among Industry, Government, Academia, and Local Communities
Over the five-year research period, this project will expand social recognition of underwater archaeology and the protection and utilization of underwater cultural heritage in Japan, while establishing a framework for fostering young researchers and successors who are interested in these fields. As the organizational foundation for these activities, an Japan Consortium for Underwater Cultural Heritage will be established. Upon completion of the project, this consortium will serve as the basis for the creation of the Japanese Society for Underwater Cultural Heritage (tentative name). Using the archaeological remains of the Mongol invasions preserved in Imari Bay as a point of departure, the project will promote international awareness of the Mongol invasions that profoundly affected medieval Asia and of the current state of research on this subject in Japan. Furthermore, it will contribute to historical research throughout Asia and to the protection and utilization of cultural heritage, including underwater cultural heritage. In addition, the project will use these achievements to promote regional revitalization, establish frameworks for international collaborative research, and contribute to international understanding and peaceful coexistence.
