Seminar Series
When: Tuesdays 3:00 – 4:00 PM Spring Semester 2027
Engage with experts from UNC-Chapel Hill, UNC-Charlotte, and JCSU in weekly seminars exploring data-centered applications in biology, public health, and computer science. Learn how data transforms health outcomes, innovation, and equity in STEM.
Summer Boot Camp
When: May 10 – May 21, 2027 Monday–Friday 9:30 AM – 4:30 PM
DataSmiths students will participate in a two-week boot camp on Python, R, databases, and data visualization.
Undergraduate Research Experience
When: May 24 – June 16, 2027
Students receive a four-week paid research internship at JCSU or partner universities. Work will include data projects related to AI, bioinformatics or data science application in biology or health.
Mentorship & Career Development
Each student is matched with a graduate student mentor from a partner institution.
Through six mentorship sessions, students receive academic guidance, career advice, and preparation for graduate school applications.
Showcase & National Opportunities
Students will present their research in a campus symposium and apply to present at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR).
Sophomores and Juniors enrolled in a STEM major at Johnson C. Smith University
Students with an interest in continuing education in MSc or Phd
Minimum GPA: 3.0
Must be willing to commit to all program activities throughout the academic year and summer
Program Stipends
$600 for participation during the academic year
$3,300 for the boot camp and summer research experience
Paid summer housing on campus during program period
