Call for Papers — JCSS 2026 International Organized Session
This event will be held as an organized session at JCSS 2026 (The 43rd Annual Meeting of the Japanese Cognitive Science Society), which will take place from August 31 to September 2, 2026. Session presenters need to register for JCSS 2026.
Submission deadline: April 17, 2026
Notification: To be announced
Camera-ready deadline: July 2026
Session date: August 31, 2026
This Organized Session is a successor initiative that connects the outcomes of the CogSci Asia-Pacific Meetup Kickoff (2025) to the annual meeting of the Japanese Cognitive Science Society (JCSS). Its goal is to foster an enduring international community interface between domestic and international cognitive science research. The CogSci Meetup brought together diverse researchers from 13 countries and regions and enabled cross-disciplinary exchange and networking in cognitive science. To ensure such international exchange becomes enduring rather than a one-off event, it is important to establish an institutionalized “contact point” within a major academic society in Japan.
This OS aims to create an open English session at JCSS as a “gateway” where Japanese and international cognitive scientists can meet, exchange research findings, and build collaborations. While cognitive science research in Japan is internationally competitive, presenting in Japanese can be a barrier for many international researchers who typically present in English. This would enable a clear and accessible entry point for international participation. Likewise, the session serves as an opportunity for researchers in Japan to disseminate their research globally without leaving Japan.
The session primarily targets international researchers and students residing in Japan, including international graduate students, providing a practical venue to present and discuss their work in English within the domestic academic community. At the same time, the session is open to Japanese researchers and students to disseminate their work internationally without leaving Japan, and serves as a supportive venue for practicing presenting in English. We also welcome participation from overseas visitors who attend the conference in person.
The OS will be structured mainly around open (call-based) presentations rather than invited talks. If the number of submissions is large, we will flexibly allocate the latter half (or half) of the 120-minute slot to a poster session and networking, in order to maintain high-quality interaction and discussion.
This OS is proposed as an initiative planned and operated by the International Exchange Office of the Cognitive Science Society.
Objectives
To connect the momentum created by the CogSci Meetup to JCSS and establish an institutional gateway for international exchange within the annual meeting
To provide an effective English presentation venue for international researchers and students residing in Japan, facilitating interaction with the domestic community
To offer Japanese researchers and students a safe opportunity to practice English presentations and Q&A, strengthening international communication skills
To welcome participation from overseas visitors and foster networking that can lead to future collaborations and joint initiatives
Ultimately, to enhance the international visibility and presence of JCSS and Japanese cognitive science
Plan and Format
Language: English
Format: Fully in-person
Core design: Open, call-based presentations (primarily oral). If submissions are numerous, a poster session will be added.
Scope: Broad cognitive science topics (psychology, neuroscience, computational approaches, cognitive modeling, AI, HCI/CSCW, education/applications, etc.)
Target presenters:
International researchers and students residing in Japan
Japanese researchers/students who want to present in English
Overseas cognitive scientists interested in Japan
Expected outcomes: expanded international exchange, seeds for collaborations and future events, and increased international presence of JCSS.
