Each year the College Board reviews tens of thousands of student submissions. They pick exemplary portfolios from all over the globe and let the artists explain a little more about the processes that made their AP experience a success.
AP-3D Art & Design students produce creative visual responses to their own unique and personally relevant sustained investigation questions. Students choose from an almost unlimited range of materials including traditional sculpture media as well as laser cutters, light, 3D printers, et cetera. SI Questions can be on any topic, ranging from personal experiences to curiosities in any domain: STEM, culture and history, or pursuits of pure beauty for the sake of creative exploration. Students follow an inquiry cycle, always critiquing and refining the ways their designs communicate their evolving SI ideas. Top scoring portfolios show advanced art-making skills coupled with processes and materials that support SI ideas.
Bonus: Ms Cohen has worked multiple years as a College Board AP Art & Design exam reader/evaluator.
Worth Noting
Pass rates for AP 2D are high and the exam focuses on art-making processes as well as final products. AP 3D Design has a lower rate of "5's" but the pass rate globally is still over 70%. AP3D follows the same exam format and makes for a great year of creative 3D design exploration guided by each student's unique inquiry goals. All Studio Art AP exams are portfolio-based with minimal writing that explains the student's artistic process and results.
AP Art students work as a focused, diligent, curious, productive, and supportive team. Prior art and design experience helps but is not a prerequisite.
Sustained passion for your chosen theme, curiosity, and a good work ethic are required.
