English Department Mission Statement
The English Department’s mission is to teach effective communication with an emphasis on improved writing, reading, verbal, and interpretive skills; to encourage critical thinking and information-seeking from both primary and secondary sources (including online); to promote a broadened world view through the study of literature; and to foster collaborative learning and the use of computers as a resource. In fostering these skills and attitudes, the department fulfills the four aims of general education: development of a point of view, acquisition of essential knowledge, adherence to important principles, and development of skills or competencies.

Welcome to the Division of English & Journalism at Johnson County Community College, which also includes English for Academic Purposes. “ENGL” is the abbreviation used in the Catalog of Courses and in the Credit Class Schedule to designate both writing and literature courses. JOUR is the designation for journalism courses, and EAP is used for English for Academic Purposes.
The English Department Guide is designed to familiarize English instructors with the overall structure of the department as well as to help orient them to the department mission and its objectives. The Guide focuses primarily on the department’s required writing courses, including full descriptions, objectives, and requirements, and how each course fits into the overall writing sequence. Additionally, this Guide includes information on the Writing Center as well as links to the College Success Department, EAP course information, and other essential resources.
Finally, it is helpful to know that the department is administered by the English Department Chair and by the Dean of the English and Journalism Division. Our Chair sees to the smooth running of day-to-day activities, including faculty class schedules, overseeing the hiring of adjunct English faculty, and serving as a member of standing department-level committees; our dean oversees the division budget, manages personnel, and represents the division in college-wide administration concerns.
