Judy Coalter was a renowned figure skating coach, known by skaters from across the province. Having coached for decades in Southern Ontario, Judy and her husband, Gary Coalter, retired in the beautiful Almaguin area. Little did she know, however, that her dedication to the sport and her love of coaching would not stop here.
They say that word gets around quickly in a small town- with the rumour of a new figure skating coach in the area, Judy found herself back on the ice soon enough. Starting out by providing private lessons, local skaters and parents quickly recognized Judy's skill. As she took on more and more skaters, it was not long until she was invited by the South River Skating Club to share her expertise with the community. The small-town skaters travelled all over Ontario to compete at regional and provincial levels, motivated by Judy's unconditional support.
The South River Skating Club was devastated by the loss of their beloved skating coach in April of 2019. Judy had played an influential role in the development of the skating club, and its athletes. Her passion for the sport and for coaching was unmatched, and her drive and commitment to her skaters was admired by all.
To honour her, and the impact she had made in the skating community, one of Judy's skaters, Megan Lee, developed a scholarship initiative to share her love of skating. Being part of South River Figure Skating Club for over 10 years, Megan wanted to share Judy's legacy and expand the accessibility of the sport within the Almaguin community. As a result, the Judy Coalter Memorial Scholarship was born.
Through donations and fundraising events, the Scholarship aims to provide new opportunities for kids to get involved in the sport. The Scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving youth in the community, covering the costs of one year's registration fees for the South River Skating Club.
