James Monaghan is a Professor and Chair of the Biology Department at Northeastern University, where he also directs the Chemical Imaging of Living Systems (CILS) Shared Research Facility. His laboratory studies the cellular and molecular mechanisms of tissue regeneration using the Mexican axolotl salamander, with a focus on developing innovative genetic, imaging, and transcriptomic approaches to understand how complex tissues rebuild themselves. His work spans limb, spinal cord, retinal, and lung regeneration, and has contributed broadly to the axolotl genetic toolkit, including transgenic reporter lines, CRISPR/Cas9 editing, and volumetric imaging. Dr. Monaghan received his Ph.D. from the University of Kentucky and completed postdoctoral training at the University of Florida.
