JBCA Autumn Computing Sessions
JBCA Autumn Computing Sessions
Every year, Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics runs a series of introductory computing sessions starting in October to approximately coincide with the new intake of postgraduate students.
Attendance is highly recommended for research postgraduate (PhD and MSc) students, particularly new students. Although aimed at our new JBCA researchers, everyone is welcome including MPhys students. These talks are designed to be an introduction to useful skills for your research, and an introduction to computing at JBCA. We cover all the basics, from Linux and the high-performance computing facilities available in the department, through to backing up your work (please do this), to interferometry and statistics, and even dip into those other skills such as paper writing, report formatting and conferences.
Sessions are led by other researchers within the department. This web page gives the times and dates of all scheduled sessions, as well as any materials from them.
JACS 2024 is currently being planned to take place on Thursdays at 10 am (except a few), so check your emails, PGR Discord or JBCA Slack for the link!
All the dates and times for JACS sessions in 2024 will be shown in the calendar. You can add all the JACS sessions to your Google Calendar by clicking the +GoogleCalendar button. You can find the abstracts for the 2024 talks here, where we will also try to make the presentations available after each session.
We are often asked if there is a LaTeX thesis template available to share. Laura Driessen has made a LaTeX template based on the guidelines for a University of Manchester PhD thesis. This has been built for Overleaf and is available as a zipfile here.
If you are going to use this template please be aware of the following:
This template has been made using the University of Manchester guidelines for PhD theses. As such, you will need to check the guidelines for your program to see if this template conforms to them.
Laura does not take responsibility for whether or not your thesis meets the formatting requirements of the University of Manchester for your program, or the suitability of your thesis for submission.
Please read the README file included in the zipfile for more information.
Please let us know if you find any issues in the template.
The University of Manchester maintains its own Overleaf profile with FAQs on how to get started with an upgraded professional account, and useful templates from theses and reports, to applications and papers.
