This is Md. Jayedul Islam graduated from the Department of Zoology (2017) from Jagannath University, Dhaka, Bangladesh, and completed my Master’s degree (MSc) in Zoology (2019) from the same institution. Currently, I am working as a Chief Monitoring Officer at “Fisheries Livelihood Enhancement Project in the Coastal Area of the Bay of Bengal in Bangladesh (FiLEP)" funded by JICA and implemented by the Department of Fisheries, Bangladesh and INTEM Consulting Inc., Japan
My research interests include aquatic biodiversity, DNA taxonomy, population genomics, phylogeography, conservation biology and metabarcoding of aquatic organisms. During my master’s degree, I conducted my thesis entitled “Genetic Diversity and Population Structure of the Scalloped Hammerhead Shark Sphyrna lewini (E. Griffith & C. H. Smith, 1834) in the Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh” which will be published soon.
I have been engaged in the execution of several national and international research projects and scientific programs including the Global analyses of mangrove ecosystems by eDNA metabarcoding" launched under the JSPS Core to Core Program (Type: B. Asia-Africa Science Platforms) (Bangladesh part started on January 2022- March 2023), DNA Barcoding and metabarcoding of reef-associated organisms in Saint Martin’s Island; assessing the amphibian fauna at Lawachara National park, feeding ecology of Northern pig-tailed macaque, cataloguing coastal fisheries resources of Bangladesh through DNA barcoding; monitoring, conservation and population genetics of shark and rays of Bangladesh.
I have published 30 research articles in different peer-reviewed national and international journals besides a number of popular scientific articles and one book chapter. Some notable publications were the DNA barcoding of reef-associated fishes in Saint Martin Island, Northern Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh, the discovery of two marine fishes in the world, published several country records of fish, butterflies and birds, published population genetic studies on mud crabs, and so on. My research experiences guided me in the rhythm of research on aquatic organism and their conservation specifically in the field of biodiversity assessment, meta barcoding and population genomics.
I am also the author of one scientific album of books namely “Underwater Citizens of Saint Martin’s Island, Bangladesh”. I have participated in several national and international conferences at home and abroad and presented my research works. I am also a member of different professional societies including the Zoological Society of Bangladesh (ZSB), and the Fisheries Society of Bangladesh.
