Jaya Prakash

I am currently working as an Assistant Professor at Department of Instrumentation and Applied Physics, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru and currently leading the Frontiers in Imaging, Spectroscopy and Theranostics (FIST) Lab.

Prior to my current position, I was a Group Leader and Alexander von Humboldt Fellow at the Institute for Biological and Medical Imaging (IBMI), Helmholtz Zentrum München and at the Chair for Biological Imaging, Technical University Munich. I was working with Prof. Vasilis Ntziachristos on developing theoretical, computational and experimental methodologies for optical and optoacoustic imaging.

I have spent three years of my student life at Medical Imaging Group in Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru where I obtained my M.Sc. (Engineering) in computational sciences and Ph.D. (mentored by Prof. Phaneendra K. Yalavarthy, as a Microsoft Fellow) in optical image reconstruction/inverse problems in 2012 and 2014 respectively.

Born in Bengaluru, Karnataka. I graduated from Amrita School of Engineering with a bachelors of technology (B.Tech.) in Information Technology and completed my entire schooling from Army Public School, Bengaluru. I have also worked closely with industry like Shell Technology Center-Bengaluru, iThera Medical-Munich, and Tosibha Embedded Software Limited-Bengaluru.

I work on developing computational, theoretical and experimental methods for obtaining real time three dimensional optical/optoacoustic imaging and multi-modal imaging systems. The focus also lies in understanding the utility of these novel optical/optoacoustics methods for therapy monitoring, early detection of atherosclerosic lesions and respiratory diseases in small animal models. Apart from this, I am interested in the basic physical understanding of light, sound, and magnetism.

Apart from research, I have interests in economic and politics around the globe.
