I was born in Baja California, Mexico where I learned to grill carnes asadas and to speak Spanglish. I became interested in the topic of long-run development after reading Marx, Polanyi, and Douglass North.

After a while, I relocated to The Netherlands to study economic history & development. I received my Ph.D. degree in Economics at the University of Groningen (Rijksuniversiteit Groningen). During those years of living in The Netherlands (and Poland) I got concerned about the natural environment and whether societies can learn from the past, catch up, and promote long-term sustainable growth.

My research seeks to understand the implications of climate change in the Arctic economy and emerging markets; the economic impact of colonialism; and the changing relations of labor and commodities between the so-called Global South and Global North.

Despite growing up in a Californian weather I have a fascination with cold temperatures. I love pristine natural landscapes and the way of life of indigenous people of the Arctic. My hobbies are listening to alternative music, cooking spicy foods, reading novels, watching live sports (for fantasy analytics) & trading penny stocks.
