The idea of this learning community originated with Dr. Yao Zhang Hill, Specialist in the Assessment and Curriculum Support Center at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Spurred on by two recent well-attended AALHE learning exchange and member webinar events on ChatGPT, Yao incepted an idea of an informally hosted learning community where higher education professionals dedicated to assessment could come together and engage in conversations related to how artificial intelligence (AI) tools are impacting their practice. Yao began gathering interested assessment professionals to facilitate engaging discussions and sought two leaders to co-chair a year-long learning community that became known as Java Jams: AI in Assessment for Higher Education Assessment Professionals.
