Nominated by the OC Cappies for Best Lighting In A Musical
When going in to the lighting design for Mamma Mia, I wanted the lights to feel like a concert -- with bright flashes and fun movement. I helped make this look through using the Disco Ball that was installed for the show, along with theatrical haze to bring out the light beams.
Mamma Mia is such a bright, vibrant show -- but it's easy to fall into the same motif's for every scene. To help prevent my lights from becoming one-note, I made sure to tackle the scenes with a more specific narrative.
In any scene that take's place in Donna's room, I use purples and pink to create a reminiscnent nostalgic feeling.
In the movie version of this scene, Donna hides away in the bathroom while Tanya and Rosie sing to her. To emulate this, I hit her with ornage light from beind -- while using blue on downlights throughout the rest of the state to isolate her from everywhere else.
In Mamma Mia, I used a bright, saturated blue and yellow, contrasting with the lighter -- more natural -- looks of those colors the scene prior to help outline Donna's dream-like state
