I have a variety of interests, and I'm glad I've had different internship, research, and workshop opportunities that allow me to explore them! During both my undergraduate and graduate studies, I've gained experience in CCUS, hazards/risk assessment, machine learning, and bilingual science education.
Growing up as a first-generation college student, I was not aware of the opportunities in the geosciences and I also didn't know of anyone being a geoscientist even though I grew up in Houston. Therefore, I enjoy taking the time to learn what interests me most and being active in K-12 educational programs so I can share my experiences and encourage young children to learn about geosciences!
August 2024 - March 2025
This school year, I am the Team Leader for Virginia Tech's SEG EVOLVE team through a site-scale CCUS project at the Matagorda Island! I focused on seismic interpretation using Kingdom :)
June 2022 - August 2022
During my internship with NETL, I visualized geological, groundwater, well, and structural data for the Illinois Basin. I also created maps for risk modeling associated with CO2 injection projects. I wrote a final report which was published internally and presented my summer research during the Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship Technical Forum at the U.S. Department of Energy Headquarters.
June 2021 - July 2021
This collaborative internship program between the University of Houston and Texas Southern University focused on innovation and entrepreneurship in the energy sector. Through this virtual internship program, I learned about intellectual property, lab-to-market, and business plan development through workshops hosted by representatives of the USDOE and USPTO. I collaborated with my teammates to conduct market research and feasibility for automated biofuel pumps. We presented business and revenue models at the end of the program and our project was recognized as "Most Marketable".
January 2024 - 12/2024
I developed low-cost GNSS stations using Orangepi and Sparkfun Electronics single-board computers in efforts to monitor wave heights in real-time along the coast of Greenland.
December 2022 - May 2023
During my time in Guatemala, I was exposed to planning and conducting LiDAR drone surveying, electrical resistivity surveys, rock identification, geological trenching, and photogrammetry. My main focus was measuring fault offsets of the Motagua Fault in Guatemala from LiDAR point cloud data.
April - May 2024
Translated and edited science news articles into Spanish for Eos en Español, a science news magazine published by AGU.
August 2023 - December 2023
I taught 2 laboratory classes to engineering students, covering topics including the Earth's structure, minerals and rock properties, and geologic processes. This semester taught me how to explain and simplify the importance of geologic systems in environmental and mining engineering to students who had minimal exposure to geology classes.
July 2023
During a 1-week summer camp, I led STEM activities centered around engineering design and Mars exploration. I guided students in research about habitation on Mars and helped them design their own "housing". This experience allowed me to teach students a geologist's role in planetary studies.
April 2023
During a 1 month weekend camp, I taught students basic coding, using Scratch, covering topics like loops and conditionals.
April 2023 - August 2023
I translated educational modules into Spanish for GPlates, a software for interactive visualization of plate tectonics. I also drafted surveys to assess high schoolers/undergraduate student knowledge on plate tectonics.
January 2025
3-day workshop at WHOI focused on autonomous vehicles for scientific ocean drilling.
October 2024
Selected to participate in a 3-day short course at the University of Georgia. Interpreted stratigraphy of the Capistrano Formation, California from photopans. Ran simple 2D flow simulations to test the range of interpretation uncertainties and ultimate recoverable hydrocarbon volumes.
September 2024
Participated in hands-on activities such as core description and hand contouring and engaged in mini lessons on energy industry topics such as geophysics and geosteering.
August 2024
Participated in a summer school focused on interdisciplinary artificial intelligence and machine learning research. In my project, “Prediction of Pollutant Removal from Wastewater with Machine Learning”, I determined optimal machine learning models for a provided dataset, worked on developing a user-friendly GUI, and presented project findings and distributed results on the I-GUIDE Platform.
January 2024
This workshop focused on bathymetry and seafloor mapping. I processed and visualized multibeam sonar data using QPS Qimera, Fledermaus, and GeoMapApp. I contributed processed data to Seabed 2030, a global project to accelerate ocean mapping efforts. Processed data has been published with the Marine Geoscience Data System.
October 2023 - January 2024
This virtual workshop focused on teaching students effective methods for sharing their scientific work and passions with non-technical audiences. Here, I developed an ArcGIS StoryMap to talk about coastal Hazards in Greenland.
