Finding a Direction
My line of sitables; each utilizes a different manufacturing technique. I created quarter scale hand-crafted models of each via laser cutting foamcore, bending steel wire and 3D printing before picking a direction to move forward with.
Sitable
(sit·ta·ble) noun
an object upon which one may sit.
designers term for funky chair.
Iterating
I determined my final sitable will be 3/4" plywood cut using a CNC. I created 20 quarter scale models by laser cutting foamcore to hone my design, then moved onto a half scale model with two layers of foam for each part to put its durability to the test.
Fabrication
Off CNC bed, the plywood parts required lots of sanding; using sanding blocks of various grits for the edges and a palm sander for the rest of the surfaces the parts became smooth to the touch. After one coat of Polycrylic finish, another round of sanding was required as the finished raised the grain resulting in a very rough texture. Once I sanded each part smooth for a second time I applied two more coats of the finish. I designed my sitable to use as much of the aloted plywood material as possible by nesting as many of the parts into eaach other in the file for the machine.
