Garoono ("we," "our," or "us") built the JapMala app ("App") as a free application. This page informs you of our policies regarding the collection, use, and disclosure of information when you use our App.
JapMala is an offline-first naam jaap / mantra counter that helps you count chants on a digital 108-bead mala. All of your counting, sessions, streaks, stats, stories (kathayein), and settings are stored locally on your device. The App works fully offline and does not require you to create an account or log in. The App optionally uses Firebase (Analytics, Crashlytics & Cloud Messaging) to understand general usage, fix bugs, and deliver reminder notifications, as described below.
We do not collect, upload, record, or store your chant counts, mantra selections, or meditation sessions on our servers — this data stays on your device.
We do not collect biometric data, health data, location data, or audio recordings. The App does not use your microphone or camera.
We do not require you to create an account, sign in, or provide credentials. The App functions fully offline and anonymously.
We do not collect your name, email address, phone number, or any personal contact information unless you choose to contact us directly (for example, via the in-app Support option).
We do not access your contacts, photos, files, or any content outside the App.
The following data is stored only on your device (never on our servers):
Your chant counts, malas completed, and lifetime totals
Your jaap session history (counts, timestamps, dates)
Your custom mantras (naams) and selected naam
Your streak data (current and best streaks)
Your meditation timer history (minutes and sessions)
Your favourite kathayein (stories)
Your in-app settings and preferences (theme, language, haptics, sound)
This data never leaves your device except as described in the anonymous analytics section below (aggregate counts only, never your personal jaap history).
Firebase (Analytics, Crashlytics & Cloud Messaging) We use Firebase to understand general App usage patterns, fix bugs, and deliver notifications. These services may collect:
Anonymous usage events (e.g., number of sessions started, features used, as aggregate counts)
App performance data and crash logs (device state, stack traces)
Device information (model, OS version)
Anonymous instance IDs and push notification tokens
Remote configuration values fetched to manage content updates
This data is collected in aggregate and cannot be used to identify you personally. Your personal jaap counts, custom mantras, and meditation history are never included in any analytics event. For more information, see Firebase's Privacy Policy.
The App requests the following device permissions to function correctly:
Notifications (Optional) Used to send you optional daily reminders to do your jaap and to deliver other progress-related messages. You can disable these at any time in your device settings.
Vibration / Haptics (Optional) Used to provide haptic feedback for each bead as you count. You can turn App Haptics off at any time in Settings.
Wake Lock (Required for meditation) Used to keep the screen awake during an active meditation focus session so the countdown remains visible. This is only active during a meditation session.
Schedule Exact Alarm / Boot Completed (Android) Used to schedule and restore your daily reminder notifications reliably, including after a device restart.
Internet (Optional) Used for fetching remote configuration, syncing katha content updates, and sending anonymous crash reports and analytics. The App runs fully offline if internet is unavailable; internet access is never used to upload your personal jaap data.
JapMala is built as an offline-first, local-only app. We want to be completely transparent about how your devotional activity is handled:
All chant counting, mala roll-overs, and streak tracking happen entirely on your device.
Your jaap counts, sessions, custom mantras, and meditation history are stored only in your device's local storage (SharedPreferences and a local SQLite database).
This personal data is never transmitted to our servers or any third party.
Removing the App or clearing its app data will permanently delete all of this local data from your device.
JapMala includes a library of offline Hindu stories (kathayein) bundled with the App. We want to be transparent about how this content works:
Story content is bundled inside the App and cached locally on your device.
When internet is available, the App may check for a newer content version and update the local cache. This only downloads story text — it never uploads anything about you.
Your favourites and reading preferences (such as font size) are stored locally on your device only.
The limited data collected through third-party services is used to:
Understand how users interact with the App at an aggregate level to prioritize improvements
Identify and fix crashes and bugs
Deliver optional push notifications and reminders (if permitted)
Manage content (kathayein) updates via remote configuration
We do not sell, trade, or rent your personal information to third parties. The only data shared is the limited information collected by the third-party services listed above (Firebase), and such sharing is governed by their respective privacy policies.
We will never sell your jaap history, custom mantras, meditation data, or any other personal devotional activity. This data is not collected by us in the first place — it stays on your device.
Since we do not collect personal data directly, there is no personal data retained on our servers. Your local app data (jaap counts, session history, streaks, favourites, settings) remains on your device until you delete the App or clear app data. Third-party services retain data according to their own retention policies:
Firebase: Firebase data retention policies
The App is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided personal information through the App, please contact us so we can take appropriate action.
Note: JapMala is a devotional practice tool intended for general audiences and contains no objectionable content.
We take strict measures to protect your privacy through software architecture:
All jaap counting, session tracking, and meditation data is stored locally on your device and is never transmitted externally
Communications with third-party services (analytics, remote config) are encrypted in transit
We collect the minimum data necessary to operate the App
The App functions fully offline, so no personal data needs to leave your device for core features to work
Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have rights regarding your personal data, including the right to access, correct, delete, or restrict processing of your data. Since we do not directly collect personal data beyond what anonymous analytics services record, most of these rights apply to the third-party services used in the App. You can:
Manage push notification permissions through your device settings
Disable App Haptics, Sound on Mala, and reminders at any time in the App's Settings
Reset your counts at any time using the Reset Count option in Settings
Delete all local app data by deleting the App from your device
Contact us with any privacy-related requests
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page and updating the "Last updated" date. You are advised to review this Privacy Policy periodically for any changes.
