Survey participants: 70 students enrolled in fall semester Japanese classes, University of Calgary
Below are the results of the student awareness survey regarding the introduction of VR conducted above. According to the survey, 70% were interested in VR, and the reason they were not interested was that the price of VR headsets and other equipment was too expensive for them to afford. It was found that there is a gap in accurate knowledge about VR. The subsequent question, "If VR were a Japanese class event or club with the necessary equipment, would you want to participate?" resulted in 80% wanting to participate. It can be concluded that students' interest in VR is quite high.
In response to the question, "Do you have a VR headset?", 7.1% of all respondents answered "Yes", 21.4% answered "No, I don't have one because I'm not interested", and 71.4% answered "If I had the money, I would like to have one. The high price is still considered to be one of the main reasons. The students who have "HRC Vive," "Oculus Rift," and "Valve inde" did not have Oculus Quest 2, which they plan to purchase this time.
For example, it costs $399 (about 37,000 Japanese yen) to buy an Oculus Quest 2 headset for VR in Canada. The overwhelming majority of students said they did not have the money. The price is still too steep for the average university student.
There are many misconceptions about why people are not interested in VR.
Lack of accurate knowledge about VR was found in this survey. For example, they said that setup is a hassle. If you already have a Facebook account, you can log in right away.
Also, there was a comment that there is not enough space, but it can be done even if there is not a big space.
80% would like to participate in a Japanese-language VR event or club if it were at their university
While "VR sickness" seems to be the biggest concern, the latest VR systems are quite different from what the survey subjects were concerned about. Specifically, the technology has developed to the point where Degrees of Freedom increased from 3DoF to 6DoF, and since not only the head and neck but also the arms and legs move, the displacement from the body has decreased considerably, so it is thought to be less likely to cause sickness.
When asked, "If we loaned out VR, would you like to participate in a Japanese-language event?" we found that students are more interested in VR than we think.
It is also true that some students do not want to participate because they are not interested at all. The reason for most of them was that they did not have time.
To provide equal opportunity to students in the entire Japanese language program, we think that if the program is held outside of Japanese language classes, it would be easier for participants who do not have time to participate.
