Japanese Culture  

Japan is known to be innovative, having strong social values, and deep-rooted customs, which makes it both interesting and relevant in today's interconnected world. I hope that by learning about Japanese culture more deeply, I will become more culturally aware and respectful, especially when interacting with people from Japan or other cultural backgrounds in the future.

This deep dive will improve my ability to understand differences in communication styles, values, and behaviors. For example, Japanese culture emphasizes indirect communication, politeness, and group harmony whereas we do not do this. Understanding these traits will help me communicate more effectively and avoid cultural misunderstandings, not only with people who are from Japanese culture but in other cross-cultural situations as well.

Through research, I’ve found several important features of Japanese culture. In terms of food, traditional meals show off freshness, balance, and presentation. Dishes like rice, miso soup, and seafood are very common, and the traditional cuisine known as washoku, is even recognized by UNESCO for its cultural importance. Holidays also play a major role in Japanese life. Important celebrations include New Year, Golden Week, and Obon, a festival that honors their ancestors through specific dances and a specific ceremony. These events reflect the culture’s deep respect for family, history, and seasonal change. For music, Japan offers a blend of the traditional and modern. Instruments like the shamisen, koto, and taiko drums which are still used in ceremonies and festivals today, while J-pop and electronic music dominate the contemporary scene with the younger population of music listeners. Clothing also reflects the balance between tradition and modernity. The kimono is worn during special occasions, while modern fashion in cities like Tokyo is creative and trendsetting. This has even created a craze called streetwear fashion in which influencers dress up very fancy for their everyday lives. Uniforms in schools and workplaces highlight the value placed on order, unity, and respectability. When studying another culture, it’s important to recognize that we often interpret it through the lens of our own. This can lead to misjudgments and/or misunderstandings. For instance, what may seem like shyness or avoidance in Japanese behavior might actually reflect respect. .

To ensure the accuracy of my research and avoid bias, I plan to use sources created by people from within the culture, fact checking information through multiple pathways, and try to avoid using stereotypes. I will approach this project with openness and curiosity, always keeping in mind that I am learning from a culture that has its own deep complexity and wisdom.
