To be able to - explain what Samurai did and how they lived
The Samurai
The Samurai were respected and highly skilled Japanese warriors who were members of the military class.
A samurai was loyal to their Daimyo. A Daimyo was loyal to the Shogun. A samurai was part of a Daimyo's personal army.
The Samurai were trained to use a bow and arrow, spears and most famously, the katana.
When a Samurai lost a battle or if their Daimyo died in battle, they would often commit Seppuku.
Samurai without a master were called Ronin.
Bushido - "the way of warrior"
Samurai lead their lives according to the code of Bushido. Bushido involves loyalty to one's master, heritage, self-discipline and respectful ethical behaviour.
Seppuku was a form of ritual suicide for samurai and was strongly linked to Bushido. It was a means of a Samurai achieving an honourable death after losing their leader, being defeated in battle and to avoid enemy capture.
