Welcome to the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program. Founded in 1987, JET has sent more than 77,000 participants from around the globe (including more than 35,800 Americans) to work in schools, boards of education, and government offices throughout Japan. What makes JET unique is that it is the only teaching exchange program managed by the government of Japan. With more than 75 countries around the world currently participating in JET, this program offers a unique cultural exchange opportunity to meet people from all around the world, living and working in Japan. My bio: Ron Cox is dean of International Programs as well as professor of religion at Seaver College. Dr. Cox was faculty-in-residence in Florence (2009/2010, Summer 2014), London Religion (Summer 2015), and Heidelberg (2016/2017); he was also faculty-director for summer 2019 Jordan MESP and summer 2022 Uganda programs. He is excited to work with students and Charlie Englemann in the Japan program because of the unique opportunities to encounter the Japanese people, culture, and institutions that will contribute substantially to Seaver students' education and lives.

MIT-Japan provides students with internships and research at leading companies, research labs and universities in Japan. Internships last from 10 weeks to 12 months and are fully-funded. This means that, if you are selected as a MIT-Japan Program intern, there are no program costs to participate!

MISTI / MIT Japan Program will sponsor a limited number of scholarships that will cover airfare and program participation fee (hotel, program designated meals and participation costs, but NOT incidentals and non-program funded meals) for MIT students exhibiting genuine interest in learning Japanese and going to Japan on an internship or work experience. Preference will be given to students who are considering or have taken at least one semester of Japanese at MIT.

The program has an on-site Resident Director who teaches one course each semester as well as overseeing academic, student, and administrative matters for the consortium (the Resident Director is a faculty member from one of the American consortium universities).

The program was established in 1976 on the campus of Konan University and has served over 600 students from a number of different American universities. The program is administered by the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for a consortium of American universities that includes the University of Arizona, the University of Hawaii-Manoa, and the University of Pittsburgh.

The program is housed in the Konan International Exchange Center (KIEC) of Konan University, a liberal arts university of 10,000 students in a suburban district of Kobe. Kobe is located in the Kansai area, the middle part of Japan which includes Kyoto, Nara, and Osaka. It is the sixth largest city in Japan with a population of l.5 million and is an international port city.

The cost of study abroad programs in Japan can vary depending on if you enroll through a program provider or directly through a university. Generally, direct enrollment tuition fees range between $3,000 to $20,000 USD, while third-party program provider fees range between $8,000 to $25,000 USD. Enrolling directly at a Japanese university is typically the cheapest way to study in Japan.

US citizens along with many other nationalities can study abroad in Japan. American students can enroll directly in Japanese universities, sign up with a program provider, or participate in an exchange through their home university.

Facilities include classroom space, art studios, computer labs and a wireless network, student lounges, a library, a career center, a teaching and learning center, and administrative offices. On the first floor of the main building, you will find the Office of Student Services and Engagement (OSSE). As the office responsible for non-academic programming and support, OSSE will likely serve as your home base during your time at Temple Japan.

Temple students and non-Temple students: with approval from your home institution, you may elect to arrange your own housing. If you opt for independent housing, you will be required to provide your confirmed housing address (the same address for the entire semester) to Education Abroad one month prior to the start of the program.

Temple students and non-Temple students are charged the non-matriculated student rate based on residency. For the 2023-24 academic year, PA residents are charged $8,988 and non-PA residents are charged $16,188 for a full-time courseload of 12-18 credits. *Non-Temple students: your program costs may vary depending on your home institution's billing model. The Exchange & Study Abroad Program is an academic program for exchange students from overseas partner institutions, as well as selected individual applicants, who wish to learn about Japan and experience it in person. Students may participate in Exchange & Study Abroad for either a single semester or an academic year. The program offers Japanese language skills and training courses from the introductory to advanced levels. A wide variety of culture and civilization courses on Japan taught in English are also offered each semester. Exchange & Study Abroad allows students from other countries to learn about and experience Japan within the supportive environment of J. F. Oberlin University's Center for International Studies.

The Amgen Scholars Program at the University of Tokyo offers motivated and talented undergraduate students from all over the world with an opportunity to experience scientific research in one of the leading institutions of higher education in Asia and the world. During the program each student will be placed in a laboratory, each led by a leading scholar belonging to one of the five participating graduate schools/institutes of the university: Graduate School of Science, Graduate School of Engineering, Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences, and the Institute of Industrial Science.

The Japan-World Bank Program for Mainstreaming Disaster Risk Management in Developing Countries (the Program) is a program established by the partnership of Government of Japan and the World Bank to support client countries in enhancing their resilience against climate change and natural hazards. The Program aims to achieve this objective by funding technical assistant (TA) grants (a list of projects can be found on the map below) and by connecting Japanese and global expertise and best practices in disaster risk management (DRM) with developing countries and World Bank teams.

The World Bank Tokyo DRM Hub is responsible for the day-to-day management of the Program and actively connects Japanese expertise and knowledge in disaster resilience, quality infrastructure, and sustainable urban development with resilience programs and initiatives. It also collaborates with other Japan-supported programs such as the Tokyo Development Learning Center (TDLC), the Quality Infrastructure and Investment (QII) Trust Fund, and the Global Infrastructure Facility (GIF) to maximize efforts and scale support to resilient infrastructure investments.

These projects have been key towards increasing country capacity for assessing and designing disaster risk management policy and solutions. This includes, for example, supporting the adoption of national policy frameworks for mainstreaming disaster and climate resilience across infrastructure and social sectors; and strengthening building codes and land use planning systems. Most notably, program activities have helped countries mobilize World Bank financing for resilient infrastructure investments.

We plan to operate the Semester Abroad in Tokyo, Japan program as scheduled. We may need to make adjustments, depending on global health concerns and as well as guidance and instructions from local and international health authorities. Since 1994, Temple University, Japan Campus (TUJ), has offered students from Temple Law School, other U.S. law schools, and international law schools the unique opportunity to study in Tokyo, Japan, for an entire semester.
