To upgrade the firmware, a specific file must be downloaded from the Internet and uploaded to the device. Firmware upgrades can fix software bugs, improve features, and extend the life of the device. These improvements can benefit the overall performance of a device. When a firmware upgrade is applied the communications of the router stops temporarily.

This document explains how to upgrade the firmware on RV016, RV042, RV042G, and RV082 VPN Routers.

Note: Click Firmware Download from Web Site if you have not already downloaded the firmware. Once clicked, the information page for your router will open in a new window of a web browser. Click Download Software under the Support heading on the right side of the page. Click Small Business Router Firmware on the next webpage and select your device to download the firmware.

A few days ago i found on internet that someone found how to "hack" the firmware, by asking the GPL code to cisco. And then he was able to compile a new firmware with SSH + Telnet enabled. Everything is described here :

Would it be possible to flash the Octeon generic firmware ???

 -project.org/releases/17.01.2/targets/octeon/generic/

i'm a noob and don't know what to do exactly at this point...

Can someone guide me ?

That image is not for flashing, that is kernel image that is used to load LEDE kernel in order to then sysupgrade to device appropriate image when you cant use web UI or ssh of the device since they do firmware checking.

well, being able to flash LEDE on that router was the last reason to keep it. The original firmware doesn't have support for VLAN on WAN side which make this router totaly useless...Even cheap routers like tplink have vlan support on WAN...shame on Cisco.

Does anyone know where I can find the latest version of the firmware for the RV042 10/100 4-port VPN router? I could be wrong but it appears that Cisco made changes to the design of the RV042, and released it under the same name. The version of the firmware posted on the Cisco website is VERY different... which suggests that it is not compatible with my RV042. Furthermore, I found the following posting in one of the Cisco forums:

"Note: This firmware version will only work with the newly released RV042, RV082, and RV016 Version 3 hardware. It is not backward compatible with previous hardware versions." [SOURCE: RV016, RV042, RV082 Hardware V3 Firmware Update]

It's a bit confusing... But basically over the years Cisco has released the RV042 with different hardware. As such, you have to be mindful when upgrading your router as the firmware versions are not backward compatible with the older hardware (like mine).

Routing throughput running the latest v4.0.3.03-tm firmware and our router test process for the RV082 v3 and RV016 v3 has been gathered from the Router Charts and plunked into Table 3 for your comparison convenience.

The gear is vulnerable if it is running a firmware release earlier than Release 1.0.01.02, according to Cisco. Affected devices include the RV160 VPN Router, RV160W Wireless-AC VPN Router, RV260 VPN Router, RV260P VPN Router with POE, and RV260W Wireless-AC VPN Router.

The web interface of the Cisco Small Business RV160, RV160W, RV260, RV260P, and RV260W VPN Routers are also vulnerable to remote attacks via a directory traversal issue. Admins need to ensure devices have firmware that is release 1.0.01.02 or later to be protected. ff782bc1db
