1. How to buy tickets
Tickets can be purchased at JR ticket windows, Midori no Madoguchi (Green Window), and automatic ticket machines. Tickets can also be purchased online, but if you are a first-time user, it is safe and reliable to buy tickets at the "windows" where station staff will support you.
They are used to giving travel guidance to foreigners, so if you don't know where to go, they will kindly tell you. When buying tickets, just tell the station staff the following information.
・When?
・Where are you going? (Where do you want to go, station name)
・How many people?
・Reserved seats? Unreserved seats? (The difference will be explained below.)
Example: "July 3rd, Tokyo to Himeji, tickets for 4 people, reserved seats please."
Tickets can be purchased on the day you board the Shinkansen.
2. Types of tickets
Board tickets
Tickets purchased when using the train. You must purchase one even on the Shinkansen.
3. Limited Express Ticket
This is a ticket for riding the Shinkansen (Limited Express), and is purchased together with the boarding ticket. This is to pay for the "Limited Express (fast)" service, which is faster than regular trains. The train number, seat number, departure time, and station name are written on the ticket, so make sure you check that they are correct.
You will need one of each of these two types of tickets (two in total).
4. Unreserved Seat
You can ride anywhere you like on a train with unreserved seats. However, if it is crowded or if there are many friends or family members riding with you, you may not be able to sit in the same seat. Also, the unreserved seats (cars 1 to 3 from the front) are fixed, so please try not to ride on trains with different numbers.
5. Reserved Seat
Since the seats are fixed, you don't have to look for an empty seat. You can sit in a reserved seat by paying about 500 yen more than for unreserved seats. When you buy the ticket, you can choose your seat yourself, or the staff at the counter will ask you your preference.
6. Green Car
Green Car is a luxury seat. The seats are spacious, quiet, and comfortable, making for a great time. The fare varies depending on the length of your trip, but for example, from Tokyo to Nagoya, you will have to pay 4,000 yen more than if you were to use a reserved seat.
7. Changing your ticket
If you want to change or cancel the time of your ticket, go to the ticket counter and tell the station staff. For example, if you want to take a Shinkansen train that departs earlier than the time of the ticket you bought, you can change it once.
8. How to use the service
Ticket gate
The train ticket gate and the Shinkansen ticket gate are separate. When using the Shinkansen, be sure to go through the gate marked "Shinkansen ticket gate."
Insert both your regular ticket and limited express ticket into the ticket gate together. When the tickets come out, make sure you have both. Be careful, because if you lose your ticket here, you will have to pay an additional fee.
Also, once you have finished riding the Shinkansen, your ticket may come out again at the ticket gate. This ticket can be used up to the train station you selected when buying your ticket, so don't forget to take it. At Himeji Station, the Shinkansen exit and the station exit are separate.
9. Platform
The Shinkansen platform is long, unlike trains, so make sure to check the number of the train you are boarding (car number XX). Unreserved seats are not assigned, so people may line up at the entrance. If you have a preference, such as a window seat, please line up early.
10. There are "waiting rooms" near the ticket gates and on the platform, so you can wait there until the Shinkansen departs. There are televisions, food, and drinks, but be careful not to lose track of time and relax too much.
11. Boarding the Shinkansen
When you get on the train, check the seat number. If you have a reserved seat, someone else may mistakenly sit in your seat. In this case, show your ticket and say, "This is my seat."
On the train, staff may ask you to show your ticket. Keep your ticket ready at all times.
If you are going to sleep, the arrival time is written on your ticket, so set your alarm 5 minutes before arrival. There is less than a minute between when the Shinkansen arrives at the station and when it departs for the next station, so no one will wake you up.
12. Go to the ticket gate
After you have boarded the Shinkansen, go to the ticket gate. Insert your boarding ticket + limited express ticket. When your ticket comes out as you leave the gate, don't forget to take it. You will need it when you use the station exit gate afterwards.
