Jane Caruso Memorial Scholarship

Calling all Trumbull High School poets! The Jane Caruso Memorial Scholarship to Poetry by the Sea is an opportunity for THS students who would like to deepen their commitment to learning poetic craft. The field trip to the conference will take place on Thursday, May 21, 2020, and up to ten THS students will be selected to attend.

Poetry by the Sea: A Global Conference in picturesque Madison, CT focuses on form and narrative. This year’s workshop will be of interest to students who want to develop their ability to balance showing versus telling, the concrete versus the abstract. “Participants will come away from the workshop with a handful of strategies to consider when negotiating image and statement in their own poems.”

You will find a welcoming atmosphere of "diversity and inclusiveness, courtesy, and a reach-for-the-stars grandeur. You will find poetry, both formal and free verse, on the page and in the air, and in multiple languages. You will find MacArthur winners, PBS-featured poets, heads of foundations and poetry organizations, well-known editors, online entrepreneurs, directors of writing programs, and students of poetry, at multiple levels.”

As an educator who taught English at Trumbull High School from 2003 to 2018, it brings me great joy to present this scholarship in memory of my grandmother, Jane Caruso.

I look forward to seeing you by the sea!
