James Simon didn’t set out to be a producer. His connection to theater started with acting. As a child, he regularly performed in school and camp shows, building a strong early bond with live performance. These early roles allowed him to understand the energy and emotion of theater from the perspective of a performer.
Although his career would eventually shift, that early exposure to the stage remained a constant influence throughout his life. Over time, as he moved through college and worked in radio, James continued to feel the pull of the theater world. Eventually, that passion would guide him to a different, more lasting role within the industry.
Today, James L. Simon is a respected Broadway producer with two Tony Award nominations and production credits that span from Manhattan to the UK.
Raised in Bronxville, New York, James later pursued a degree in communications at Emerson College in Boston. After several years in radio, he made a decision that would shape his future. In the early ‘90s, he moved to New York City to pursue acting full-time.
Like many actors trying to make it in New York, James held multiple jobs at once. But one opportunity opened a new door. While working on a revival of Damn Yankees, he had his first real encounter with the Broadway production process. This behind-the-scenes experience allowed him to witness the hard work and coordination that goes into building a professional show.
That experience marked a turning point. From then on, James Simon, the Producer, began to take shape. He discovered that he had both interest and skill in managing productions, identifying promising ideas, and assembling the right creative teams. He learned how to balance imagination with the demands of production logistics, and that combination became central to his work.
James L. Simon’s work has earned him multiple accolades. His first Tony Award nomination came with Bells Are Ringing, which received a nomination for Best Revival of a Musical. More recently, Operation Mincemeat brought him another Tony nomination in the category of Best New Musical.
In the Off-Broadway world, he co-produced The Woman in Black, which received the Best Play Revival award from the Off-Broadway Alliance. James has also brought shows to international stages, including productions in London’s West End.
This year, he is preparing for the 2025 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where he will present "The Marriage of Alice B. Toklas" by Gertrude Stein, a play that has received critical acclaim. Alongside that, he is co-producing a national tour of Dungeons & Dragons: Twenty Sided Tavern in the United States. This show combines interactive theater with elements of live gaming, creating a one-of-a-kind experience for its audience.
When asked why he continues to produce, James responds directly. He believes that stories have power and that they should be accessible to all people. While he is proud of large-scale productions, he continues to support smaller, more personal shows that may not attract major attention.
James often mentions in interviews and articles that it is hard for new voices in the theatre to gain a foothold. He understands the barriers that exist and has worked to create more opportunities for emerging talent. Through mentorship, collaboration, and support, he aims to help new creators find their place.
He currently serves on the board of Untitled Theater Company No. 61 and has supported artist-focused organizations, including Artists Relief and Donors Choose.
In addition to his work in the arts, James has given time and support to broader community causes. He has volunteered with the New York Food Bank and Habitat for Humanity. He regularly donates blood through the New York Blood Bank and has contributed to groups like the Legal Aid Society.
His efforts outside the theater reflect a commitment to service and community impact, consistent with his approach to work and collaboration in the arts.
Producing is more than simply selecting a script. It includes scheduling, budget management, conflict resolution, and understanding audience expectations. A producer must also be mindful of technical and logistical limitations, as well as market timing.
In that context, James L. Simon, the Producer, acts as a central coordinator. His work often takes place in quiet, unseen spaces—on the phone, in budget meetings, or during last-minute planning sessions. These moments are what keep productions steady and on track. James believes that is where his value lies—not in taking credit, but in keeping things running behind the scenes.
He views his role as enabling the team to do their best work. His goal is to create the structure that supports creative outcomes.
Even with an impressive list of professional credits, James remains modest in his approach. He doesn’t chase popularity or work to follow current trends. He focuses instead on long-term value and meaningful storytelling.
In an industry where fast results and spectacle often dominate, he continues to support thoughtful work that offers lasting impact. He also values working environments where respect and cooperation are prioritized. For James, the measure of success includes not just the final product, but how it is made.
Looking forward, James Simon has several projects in development. While some are not ready to be publicly shared, they are expected to follow his familiar path—creative, structured, and focused on storytelling.
No matter the size or scale of the production, James puts the same level of care and effort into every phase. Whether it’s a large international tour or a small play, his method stays consistent.
James Simon, the Producer, has built a career through steady, focused work and a belief in the value of stories. As long as there are new voices to support and new ideas to explore, he will continue finding ways to bring them to life.
