Boingo

Originally designed in 2010 using Game Maker, my first ever project Boingo returns in 2024! Boingo is a friendly fellow who must embark on a grand quest to save his family - and perhaps the world whilst he's at it.

In this game, you must help Boingo bounce, wall-jump, and air-dash through a wealth of exciting 2D platforming challenges. Collect as much Star Power on your way as you can in order to explore more of the world! It's a complete reimagining of the designs from the original game 13 years ago, refined with my more recent game design experience.

A Mile In Their Shoes

During my studies, I had the opportunity to produce A Mile In Their Shoes, a collaboration between the university and Children's Hospices Across Scotland (CHAS). It's a short educational game about siblings and young people with life-limiting conditions.

The game was developed by myself and my team, Little Pioneers, between January and May 2021, as part of my Professional Project module in 3rd year. The project went on to be funded by the university, which provided us with studentships to continue work on the prototype and develop it to the point it could be shipped and used in schools in 2022.

Design Projects

Rune

For my Honours project in my final year at Abertay, I submitted a fully-playable prototype for a 2.5D platformer, Rune. The objective was to research foreshadowing and other facets of environment design, whilst also laying the foundation for a game I'd always wanted to make.

Drawing inspiration from games such as Klonoa 2, I designed a robust level featuring tight and intuitive platforming mechanics, engaging Level Design techniques, and an evocative plot hinted at within the environment. I consider it demonstrative of my strongest design skills and abilities that I learned at Abertay.

'Android Development Programme'

My submission for the audio design module I took during my 3rd year at Abertay. You control test subject #19703 in the Android Development Programme, and must follow the narrator's instructions to complete a series of tasks set before you.

This project focused on establishing an understanding of audio design methods and pipelines, and showcasing this through a homemade catalogue of foley art.

About Me

Thank you for visiting my site! My name is James, and I'm a recent graduate from Abertay University, achieving a first-class BA(Hons) in Games Design and Production.

This portfolio contains a collection of my work from university, opportunities that arose over the course of my studies, and personal endeavours. I'm interested in pursuing a career in Design, having made Level Design the focus of my honours project.

I have an absolute passion for playing and making games, and am usually thinking about or working on something related to them! Otherwise, I enjoy playing guitar, painting Warhammer miniatures, and going for (very) long walks. I'm also bilingual, having spent 10 years in France. I returned to the UK in 2016 to pursue the career path I'm currently on.

I've worked on many exciting projects over the course of my time at Abertay, including my first shipped title A Mile In Their Shoes. Currently, I'm working on my first solo indie title in my spare time.
