The onset of the COVID pandemic, mandatory quarantines, and limited social gatherings created a feeling of isolation for many. Guided by the question “how can I express hope in abandoned/isolated places?” I created a collection of pieces that encompass this feeling and hope for normality we all long for. Beginning with an abandoned building, a single human is alone in the dark staring into the light—the symbol of hope. I was inspired by Mann Ray’s experimentation with solarization and created my own take on the process in image 1, using watercolor and printer ink. In images 2&3, I develop the idea that plants, and windows representations of light. Plants are persistent and unyielding, able to grow in the most barren of places as long as light is present. Windows are the doors through which light can be seen. Images 5, 6 and 7 are where I experiment with these three symbols, exaggerating the symbol of light in image, plants, and windows in each respective image. Finally in image 8 I return to the foundation of my concentration, depicting a group of people sharing a singular vision out a window into a bright, overgrown courtyard, in anticipation of normality.
