Dr. Jairo Quirós-Tortós

Overview

I am Full Professor of Power and Energy Systems at the University of Costa Rica (UCR). Since Feb. 2016, I am the Coordinator of the Electric Power and Energy Research Laboratory (EPERLab) at the UCR. I am an IEEE Senior Member since June 2017. From April 2017 til April 2021, I was the Head of the Energy Systems Department of the School of Electrical Engineering at the UCR. From Feb. 2014 to Jan. 2016 I was a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Network Integration of Electric Vehicles at the University of Manchester (UoM), UK. I hold a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering received from the UCR and a PhD in Electrical & Electronic Engineering from UoM. I am the co-author of 85+ research papers (list of publications and Research Gate) in peer-reviewed top-class international journals and conferences, 15+ technical reports, and the co-inventor of one patent filed by UoM.

Research Interest

While working on various projects within the area of power and energy systems, the following are my main research interests:

  • Energy system planning and investment under uncertainty

  • Integrated multi-energy systems

  • Techno-economic modelling of energy systems

  • Network Integration of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs such as wind, photovoltaics, electric vehicles, storage)

  • Smart Distribution Networks and Distribution System Operators

  • Optimisation of Distribution Networks (operation and planning)

  • Future Distribution Network Management Systems

Below are short videos showing the work we do at the EPERLab.
