I would like to get vuescan going as it may be an acceptable solution for me in Linux - I use ABBYY FineReader with Windows and have struggled to find anything close to paralleling the FineReader experience in Linux. VueScan I can work with (probably with additional image editing software) if I can get it to run consistently.
I got this weird situation with VueScan when after the first launch of trial version evrything worked fine and I scanned my illustration with the watermark to see how the adjustments work, but now when I hit "preview' or "scan" my scanner starts making noises as if it's the beginning of the scanning process, but then the program just stops any activity as if the scan was complete, except there is no image shown or saved. After that nothing happens at all, no matter what buttons I press in the program, and reloading the PC or reinstalling the software doesn't help, the cycle just repeats itself - I launch the app, hit any button for the scanner to make some noises once and then nothing works at all. My scanner is Mustek A3F2400N

From Bridge I open the scans in Photoshop and run an action that I have recorded (which is very easy) which 1) sets sRGB as the colour space, and 2) launches ColorPerfect. My aim in ColorPerfect is only to get acceptable colour because I do the main colour correction in Adobe Camera Raw. The eagle-eyed reader will have noticed that in Vuescan Output color space (Color tab) is set to Adobe RGB, not sRGB. This is deliberate. Adobe RGB is a wider colour space than sRGB so I seek to capture as much colour information as possible. But sRGB is used on the web, which is the main use of my photos, so at some point I need to convert them to sRGB.
the examples were scanned at 2700. There is a good review of the scanner here which covers everything, I agree with the conclusions the author made. Scanning from within photoshop just launches the minolta software anyway, so I prefer to scan to file and to do the quick stuff with Picasa2
To answer your question about importing. It does do a direct import but it does launch Minolta's scanning software as said above. Remember though, this scanner uses a lot of resources! I recommend scanning to file and saving because Photoshop takes quite a bit of resources to just run.
Update: It worked for a few days, then I was back to the same old problem. I called Canon Support again (they were quick to answer). They had me do the following actions, which got me going again but is a temporary fix:
1) From the Windows "Start" Icon, search for "Services" and launch it.
2) Scroll down to "Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)". Right click or use the link at the left of the window to stop the service. Wait 30 seconds, then restart the service.
It worked for me, for now.
