Email Configuration Measurement Study — Scan Information
NOTICE: If you notice any unusual activity from my crawler, or if you have any other concerns, please feel free to email me anytime. I have no intention of causing any issues, and I'll respond promptly. Thank you!
Connections from this IP address are part of an academic Internet measurement study. We study how domains publish their mail submission and access server configurations through email auto-configuration mechanisms (Autoconfig, Autodiscover, DNS SRV, and client provider databases such as ISPDB). We have implemented our scanner based on [1] with the Tranco 1M list.
Researcher: Jaehwan Park, EECS / University of Tennessee, Knoxville
Advisor: Dr. Kevin Nam (Kyunghee University), Dr.Doowon Kim (University of Tennessee, Knoxville)
Publicly published mail configuration data: Autoconfig/Autodiscover configuration files, DNS SRV and MX records, and client configuration databases (e.g., ISPDB).
Collected fields are limited to configuration metadata such as server hostnames, ports, and connection types.
Data is used solely for aggregate statistical analysis and academic publication.
We never read message content (bodies, subjects, headers).
We do not attempt to log in, capture credentials, or access any account.
We do not send email or relay through any server.
All connections are limited to establishing a connection and retrieving publicly available configuration information.
We do not collect personally identifiable information or share data with third parties.
If you would like to be excluded from our scans, please contact us:
Contact: jpark127@utk.edu
Please include the IP ranges or domains you want excluded.
We typically process requests within e.g., 2–3 business days and permanently exclude the target from future scans.
For immediate blocking, you may also block the source IP(s) at your firewall.
This study is conducted following Internet measurement research ethics principles (e.g., the Menlo Report). We minimize request load and apply rate limiting.
