If you\u2019ve been near me during any Decembers in the past 10 years, you know how much my digital advent calendar means to me. Illustrator Jacquie Lawson mainly makes ecards, but in 2010 released the first edition of an animated advent calendar that I await with an almost feral anticipation every year.
\u201CThat isn\u2019t primarily why I like the Jacquie Lawson advent calendars, though,\u201D I wrote in 2020 on the website that preceded Embedded (and is now an Indonesian gambling website). \u201CI like to go there and just sit.\u201D
Like all traditions, this one has adapted and changed over the years. For instance, it was once a desktop-only application but has expanded into iOS to keep up with the times. And while my mom is the one who still gifts the calendar to me each year, a few years ago I began gifting them to my friends. We send each other pictures of the digital trees we\u2019ve decorated in our digital living rooms\u2014something that\u2019s taken on a new significance this year. My IRL Christmas tree had to be disassembled not twelve hours after it was first erected due to the behavior of two poorly-behaved kittens. It\u2019s a treeless year for me this Christmas, and as life continues to throw curveballs or otherwise change, similar holiday traditions will have to be adapted or foregone. But in the world of my advent calendar, at least, things are exactly the same.
I get these advent calendars every year. They are so much fun and a short trip to a wonderful fantasy land. My grandchildren also love the interactive nature of something new each day so I send them a copy too. I highly recommend this to anyone who loves a bit of whimsy.

Since the e-card music is typically less than a minute long, I've extended these to make them into "proper" pieces of about 3 minutes each. I've also re-recorded them at a much higher sound quality than we are able to use for the e-cards on jacquielawson.com.

Jacquie Lawson lives in the picturesque English village of Lurgashall, in West Sussex. She trained as an illustrator at St. Martin's School of Art and has many years' experience in drawing, painting and design, including architectural perspectives, book illustration and cartoons. She began working on e-cards in 2000, and by the following year her animations were becoming so popular that she teamed up with Mike Hughes-Chamberlain to meet the demand by creating the jacquielawson.com website. Over the years, a select few additional artists have joined the team, and the collection of e-cards has grown to over 350, each one showing a degree of artistry and attention to detail rarely seen in this medium.
