If you are manually deploying Microsoft Defender Antivirus Platform Update, or if you are using a script or a non-Microsoft management product to deploy Microsoft Defender Antivirus Platform Update, make sure that version 4.18.2001.10 is installed from the Microsoft Update Catalog before the latest version of Platform Update (N-2) is installed.

I have found this page -us/wdsi/defenderupdates however, it talks of "security intelligence files" and the linked page "Release notes" -us/wdsi/definitions/antimalware-definition-release-notes shows only threat detections, not an update for the Windows Defender engine.

I manage several systems that are using Defender platform version 4.13. They will not connect to my VPN network with a platform version under 4.18. These system are not updating automatically by reaching out to Microsoft. Is there a way for me to obtain a stand-alone Defender package that can be executed to install/update over top of the existing older version?

Note that the first update was on the 7/22/20 and the version is KB4052623 (Version 4.18.2007.6) and on 7/25/20 KB4052623 (Version 4.18.2007.8). Note that the Windows Defender platform update doesn't match up with the Microsoft Catalog here.

Note: that Microsoft updated today's Windows Defender Platform has updated to (Version 4.18.2007.8). I'm not real sure if everyone has gotten the latest platform update or not but it will be push out to all of the public soon.

Microsoft Defender has often been subjected to criticisms related to privacy concerns, performance issues, and intrusive behavior in recent versions of Microsoft Windows operating systems. Microsoft Defender features cloud file analysis and file submission under Microsoft Spynet Membership which eventually became Microsoft Advanced Protection Service (MAPS) when opted in with basic or advanced membership collects user data and sends to Microsoft which arises privacy concerns among users.[77][78] The cloud integration of Microsoft Defender also rose concerns among privacy advocates. The MsmpEngine of Microsoft Defender in recent versions of Windows was found to be using high amounts of system resources, especially CPU Resources when Real-time protection and scheduled scan is configured to be turned on.[79] This issue is more apparent in PCs with Intel CPUs.[80] Microsoft defender is configured by default to take up 50% of the system's CPU resources available by default, although this can be configured using Group Policy Editor along with limiting the process of MsmpEngine to use a Low Priority Process during a Realtime Scan and customizing scheduled scans.[81][82] Recent Windows Versions also deeply integrated Microsoft Defender with the operating system using mechanisms like Early Boot Anti-Malware, Tamper Protection, etc., making it almost impossible to remove or uninstall. Although these are useful to prevent malware from disabling or removing the antivirus itself, they also lead to frustration among users who utilize and seek 3rd party alternatives.[83][84][85][86] Microsoft Defender has also been found to annoy users with intrusive behavior; multiple users have reported a prompt to set up a Microsoft account with Windows while others have claimed to be nagged by a similar prompt to set up or sign into a Microsoft account for Onedrive.[87][88][89] In late-July 2020, Microsoft Defender began to classify modifications of the hosts file that blocks Microsoft telemetry and data collection servers as being a severe security risk.[90][91]

In April 2023, Windows Defender Version 4.18 showed a 100% detection and prevention rate of malware - a substantial improvement from the 2016 version. This version of Windows Defender is the latest one installed on Microsoft devices, but security updates are rolled out frequently and need to be updated.

I am having a problem with installing the "Update for Microsoft Defender Antivirus antimalware platform - KB4052623 (Version 4.18.2205.7)" Update on my Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2019 Core Server. Using sconfig it always says installation failed. I also tried to download the update file from update-katalog. You will find 3x .cab files and 3x .exe files on the microsoft update-katalog site for this update. I tried all of them. The cab files return an error, if i run them using dism:

I also found on this site -us/topic/update-for-microsoft-defender-antimalware-platform-kb4052623-92e21611-8cf1-8e0e-56d6-561a07d144ccthat Applocker could lead to this problem, if activated. But on my hyper-v server applocker isn't activated.

Note: If you then use WAC, Update, and attempt to install "KB4052623 (Version 4.18.2207.7)", it fails and goes into a loop of a failed attempts every ten minutes. A server restart does not stop the issue and updates like "Security Intelligence Update for Microsoft Defender Antivirus - KB2267602 (Version 1.375.1506.0)" are aborted unless you manually install then individually. With sparce log information to examine, all I know for sure is that the server crashes every other day.

The update with the number KB4052623 has been around for a long time but it keeps getting new revisions. The latest revision (4.18.2205.7) refuses to install on any of the Hyper-V servers. There are 7 of those servers.

Looking at the release notes I see that yesterday they released their July-2022 (Platform: 4.18.2207.5 | Engine: 1.1.19500.2) update. I'm hoping that 2207 will be able to install since 2205 sure never did.

Tried downloading from the Update Catalog, which offers three exes described as "Update for Microsoft Defender Antivirus antimalware platform - KB4052623 (Version 4.18.2205.7)". They differ only in the guid portion of the file name. One exe runs but says the executable is for a different platform; the other two run and immediately terminate, without even anything recorded in the event logs.

2. There is a note in the page at -us/topic/update-for-microsoft-defender-antimalware-platform-kb40526... Opens a new window which says the file location recently changed and in some cases permission has to be granted to allow the update the update to access it. It's not clear exactly when it changed or where one changes the permission. Has anyone looked into this aspect?

I can confirm as well. This has always been mostly a waiting game until they fix it and well, they took their sweet time (Jun 23 - about Oct 13).

The server logs show that it stopped installing it every ten minutes on Oct 13 with version 4.18.2209.7 and I was greeted in WSUS with 'computer with errors: 0' for the first time since June. :)

We recently attended a "test drive" class for Cisco AMP where they mentioned that AMP was approved by Microsoft as a 3rd party AV client that should disable windows defender. I've linked the KB below. We have several test machines with AMP deployed that also have windows defender enabled by default in Windows 10. Does anyone have any insight into this?

no, I am only talking about Windows 10 notebooks and workstations, not servers! However, you can happily run both, AMP now is the active (primary) one, as ist is supposed to be. Technically defender ist listed as inactive, but you can still let it run scheduled scans in addition. In the perception of defender it switches to inactive, because the main component "real-time protection" is disabled and taken over by AMP.

PS: Don't do that with Kaspersky, Avira or others, leads to all kind of unpredictable effects.

We were able to resolve this issue by updating Windows Defender to version 4.18.2110.6. Once this was in effect all systems switched over to using AMP as the primary AV provider and disabled Windows Defender.

Tomer Bar and Omer Attias of SafeBreach also introduced an automated tool called Defender Pretender that can replicate their attacks, as long as the version of the Microsoft Malware Protection Platform is earlier than 4.18.2303.8. The tool can be found at -Labs/wd-pretender. Microsoft catalogued the attack method as CVE-2023-24934 and patched the vulnerability in April.

The statement from the OP: "* The binary was attempted to be loaded in the process: \Device\HarddiskVolume5\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Platform\4.18.23080.2006-0\MpCmdRun.exe" This is a command line malware scan being attempted to load via Defender. That is the Windows Group Policy for system security due to the expired certificate. 2351a5e196
