I am a junior at IUPUI, majoring in Organizational Leadership with a minor in Spanish and a certificate in Human Resource Management. One of my career goals is to work in Human Resources, I am interested in HR because it will allow me to connect with people, solve problems, and better shape any organization.
At the Office of Student Employment, I've actively participated in various projects that contribute to the development of skills essential for my professional growth. In my role, I've done a variety of things such as reviewing job descriptions on Handshake, trainings, and preparing events. I've been a part of the preparation for the Part-Time Job Fair and the Professional Image Project. My portfolio will focus mostly on my experience and the knowledge and skills I've gained.
PTJF, an annual fair, serves as a prime opportunity for both on-campus and off-campus employers to recruit for part-time positions. It stands as one of OSE's biggest events. I contributed to the planning process by contacting off-campus employers, collecting resources, set-up, and participating during the event.
PIP is an event that OSE holds each year during Fall Career Week, the tabling event consists of topics such as resume/cover letters, headshots, digital signatures, VR interviews, etc. I took the lead on this project during the preparation and set-up process, and working in it.
During NSEA week, we take the time to appreciate student employees and supervisors, planning multiple events. I engaged in these occasions and had the honor of being a speaker at the NSEA awards ceremony.
JAGUAR SERIES
Before my role at OSE, one of my goals was to improve in my presentation and communication skills. Being a part of the Jaguar Series Supervisor Training allowed me to present topics that relate to student employment regarding hiring, onboarding, and training by providing student perspective, grading activities, and managing the Canvas page. I had the opportunity to take part in two Jaguar Series Bootcamps: one was an intensive all-day training, while Jaguar Series 1 and 2 spanned 4-5 weeks, meeting once a week.
On Handshake, I manage off-campus employers' job postings and revise job descriptions on Handshake this includes developing guides for recruitment and employee relations in addition to post-event evaluations and data. This process consists of making sure they have a thorough job description, that will give students a better understanding of the organization, knowledge, skills, qualifications, and experience they'll gain. It's highly important that any position is a paid opportunity and that it aligns with our institution's minimum wage which is $10.15
Reflection
Being the Training and Development intern has given me aspects of Human Resources. One of the skills that I am most proud of is being able to speak with more confidence with an audience. Participating in Jaguar Series, being a presenter at the NSEA award ceremony, and tabling events. Another thing I am proud of is being nominated as Student Employee of the Year, although I did not win, I appreciated that my work was acknowledged. Within the time of my position, one of my biggest challenges of all was organization skills, and managing school while having two jobs. One of the tasks that were the most valuable was revising job descriptions on Handshake because it gave me an understanding of the qualifications that different organizations look for, for that reason I decided to minor in Spanish to be able to interpret in any future jobs. I also participated in three events taking headshots even though it was not my role, I still enjoyed being a part of those projects.
