SkillsUSA
SkillsUSA is a national career and technical student organization that prepares students for careers in healthcare, skilled trades, and technical industries by developing leadership, teamwork, and real world professional skills through competitions, workshops, and community service. As President of SkillsUSA, I had the opportunity to take on a leadership role within the organization while guiding meaningful projects that addressed real community needs. One of the most significant initiatives I led was a long term community service project focused on raising mental health awareness within the Armenian community over the course of three years. The project addressed how generational trauma from war and genocide has contributed to a culture where emotions and mental health struggles are often left unspoken. Through this work, I promoted open dialogue about mental health, organized outreach efforts in Armenian schools and community spaces, and helped create accessible, age appropriate resources that encouraged individuals to seek support and develop healthier coping strategies. I presented this project through SkillsUSA competitions, earning 1st place at the regional level and 2nd place at the state level, recognition that reflected both the impact of the project and my ability to lead initiatives that transform community concerns into measurable, meaningful outcomes.
Podiatry Clinical Assistant
The Los Angeles Institute of Foot and Ankle Surgery is a podiatry clinic that treats foot and ankle conditions that limit mobility, helping patients recover from injuries, manage chronic pain, and maintain independence. During my year-long internship there, I shadowed Dr. Hagopjanian and gained firsthand experience observing how a podiatry clinic cares for patients. I supported daily clinic operations by answering phone calls, scheduling appointments, organizing patient files, and preparing examination rooms for visits and procedures. I also observed patient consultations and treatments, which helped me understand how physicians diagnose conditions, communicate with patients, and create treatment plans. Through this experience, I developed strong communication, organizational, and professional skills while learning how healthcare providers work collaboratively to improve patient mobility and quality of life.
Fencing
Fencing strengthened my discipline, independence, and strategic thinking through years of training and competing in national tournaments, including qualifying for and attending national competitions. The sport requires intense focus and preparation, as every bout involves quickly analyzing an opponent’s movements and planning the next action. Competing at the national level pushed me to stay organized, manage my time effectively, and communicate with my coaches and teammates while balancing school and training. Through fencing, I developed perseverance, mental resilience, and the ability to stay calm under pressure. These experiences helped me grow into someone who thinks strategically, adapts quickly in high-pressure situations, and approaches challenges with focus and consistency.
At the age of five, I began playing the piano and quickly developed a deep passion for music. Growing up in a family of generational musicians, music was always present in my life, and the piano became a meaningful way for me to express creativity and discipline. Over the years, I dedicated countless hours to practicing and performed in many recitals and competitions across the state. Preparing for performances required patience, focus, and consistency, which helped me build strong discipline and confidence. Although I no longer compete, piano remains a significant part of my life, and I continue to play simply because I genuinely enjoy it. Growing up with music has taught me perseverance, attention to detail, and the value of committing to something I truly love.
I began playing tennis at the age of seven, and it quickly became an important part of my life. Growing up, my grandfather had tennis courts in Armenia, and every summer I would spend hours there playing and improving my skills. Those summers created some of my favorite memories and sparked a passion for the sport that has stayed with me ever since. Over the years, tennis has helped me develop discipline, focus, and resilience while teaching me how to stay determined and push myself to improve. Having played for so many years, the sport has become more than just an activity; it is something I truly enjoy and a meaningful part of who I am.
