How Christianity Is Oppressive in the Public School System
This semester my we're looking into the five faces of oppression. One that interested me was the concept of cultural imperialism, where the dominant group in a society is considered the norm and all others are considered "other". Let me set the scene for you. Imagine you're a 14 year old Muslim girl, and it's your first day of high school. You walk in with high hopes for the coming year, only to realize that the school district you live in allows for public schools to be taught using the Bible. This type of situation would be quite an uncomfortable one for the student. In the United States, we coexist under the structure of a secular society, one that avoids any set religion. This is important for the equal treatment of others to avoid unfair situations. For some reason, many evangelical Christians can't seem to grasp this concept, and continue to push for school reform to fit the standards of Christianity. In this podcast, I'll discuss the relationship between these Christians and the public school systems, in hopes to shed light on the importance of a secular society and school system.
