The scholarship is open to students and alumni of Jack Yates High School and children or grandchildren of Jack Yates alumni. Eligible scholarship candidates include seniors in an accredited high school and students currently enrolled in an accredited two-year or four-year university or college.
1) A written statement (no more than 2 pages) or video (no more than 3 minutes) from each applicant reflecting on human rights, social justice, police reform, fairness, and equity of opportunities.
2) Documented participation in activities, clubs, and groups that promote social justice, advocacy on behalf of people from marginalized communities, marching in protests, attending rallies, voting, promoting policy or legal changes, etc.
3) Two reference letters from a teacher, school counselor, community activist or religious leaders who are involved in work in the greater Third Ward area.
4) At least a 2.3 grade point average upon graduation from high school or 3.0 grade point average if renewing scholarship candidate.
GEORGE FLOYD MEMORIAL “I Still Can’t Breathe” Recognition
The George Floyd Memorial “I Still Can’t Breathe” Recognition was founded to highlight the African American fight for justice by honoring traditions in the Third Ward community as reflected in creative expression.
Goal:
The goal of this award is to provide financial assistance to students currently enrolled in schools in the greater Third Ward area and to promote creative expression [for example visual arts, photography, video, written word, music, or theatre arts] that honors the life of George Floyd, civil rights and the social justice struggle of African Americans.
Eligibility:
The competition is open to students enrolled at underserved and marginalized schools in Houston, Texas that primarily focuses on students enrolled in Jack Yates High School or its feeder schools.
