I've loved basketball since I can first remember having a ball in my hand at five years-old. I played county rec ball for one winter and was hooked. I begged my parents to let me try out for another team to keep playing all year long. Made my first AAU team in 1st grade, which was a 2nd grade team called the Classics since that was the youngest team they had. In 3rd grade, I joined M.A.D.E. Basketball, which was started by a former Classics coach, and have been their starting point guard ever since. I've been very lucky to have had AAU coaches that taught me the importance of basketball fundamentals and how to play true team basketball where every player contributes on each possession regardless if they touch the ball or not. I love playing with M.A.D.E. because we've been together for so long and know how to play as one team. This has allowed us to be competitive at AAU and YBOA Nationals during the summers and regularly beat teams that are taller, stronger, and faster than us. I love to win, especially against teams that think we should be easy to beat because we look smaller and slower than them. But then they realize quickly that won't be the case since we play smart basketball as a team.
Thanks coach for teaching me not only how to play the game, but to think the game:
"Probably the most important quality that made our team successful was his basketball IQ. He was a player that I relied on to have the ball in his hands and make decisions for what situation we were in. Often, he would come to me with ideas on how to attack defenses. They say that a point guard should be an extension of the coach on the floor. Jack truly was for our team." (Carl Travis, M.A.D.E. Basketball)
My dream is to play basketball at the highest level I'm able to for as long as possible. I also want to use my basketball skills to help me get the best education possible. I hope to find a college program that has high academic standards where my skills and style of play can help the team win. I'd like to play for a coach who I can continue to learn from and keep improving.

I love to compete. Since 4th grade, I've helped my teams to a 73% win percentage (149-54 at major tournaments and during school seasons), including several top 5 finishes at YBOA D1 Nationals with my AAU team.
I make my teammates better by working hard to get them the ball in the right spot and at the right time for them to score.
Excellent court vision and in-game decision-making at speed.
Composure - I stay calm under pressure and keep playing our team's game.

I've volunteered as a junior coach/counselor in training for the Walter Johnson Basketball Camp since freshman year.
It's a camp I started attending in elementary school, and I enjoy helping to teach the kids what I've learned over the years.
I've also volunteered since 6th grade as a swim coach assistant with my summer swim team the Wildwood Wombats.
It's been fun to watch the pre-team swimmers I worked with when they were 5 and 6 years old become members of our swim team and competing alongside them. No other sport do you have a 7-year-old and 18-year-old, and boys and girls, competing together on the same team.
I was hoping to have 260 Student Service Learning (SSL) hours by senior year to receive the Certificate of Meritorious Service from the Maryland Department of Education. Unfortunately, due to COVID and my ACL injury, I was only able to get to 190 hours.
Barry University Basketball Coaching Staff
Real good feel for the game. Good size at the point guard. Does a good job of handling the ball against pressure with both hands. Does a real good job of keeping his eyes and head up when dribbling up the court in transition. Knows what the next play is and does a good job of creating shots for his teammates. Has a nice mid-range pull-up and can hit the catch and shoot 3. Not afraid to be physical and finishes through contact when getting to the basket. Overall, continue to work and get better everyday. You do a lot of good things that coaches want in a player.
Participated in the Barry U Elite Camp in Summer 2020. Read full evaluation here.
The Recruiting Insiders - former D1 coaches
Very good shooter with 3 level scoring ability. Gets shots off quickly, whether off the dribble or the catch and does a nice job with his shot preparation. Understands how to create space for himself on the perimeter with shot fakes. Sneaky athleticism to get to the rim and make plays for himself. Has a nice in between game with floaters and a mid range pull-up. Makes plays on the defensive end of the floor by getting into the opposition and being active on the perimeter with his length. Capable ball handler that can operate as a true combo guard, especially with his shooting and scoring ability. Possibly the best part of his game is vision and creation for others on the floor. Really good passer with either hand and tends to see plays before they develop!

Tori Moten, President & Founder, M.A.D.E. Basketball
Jackson proved he was capable of what we asked for and always went beyond what was expected. As he advanced through the program, I knew he would be a top notch player and leader. Court vision, athleticism, ball control and his competitiveness put his teammates in optimal situations to thrive. At first sight, every team they played against underestimated them. Jackson never showed he was intimidated by the bigger, faster players and his team got the recognition they deserved because they learned how to play the game properly. My organization started in 2011 and Jackson is by far one of the most talented players to come through my program. Intelligent point guard, excellent student, respectful, team player, and someone I am proud to wear my organization’s name on his chest. M.A.D.E. stands for My Attitude Determines Everything and if your program values our motto, having a basketball I.Q., strong character and playmaker, Jackson Van Wagener will be an excellent fit!

Carl Travis, my M.A.D.E. coach for six years
Coaching Jack and watching him grow over the years has been an honor. He always listens, works hard, and is willing to help his teammates. He has a very good skill set from ball handling, shooting, finishing with both hands, and isn't afraid to mix it up and rebound from the guard position. Probably the most important quality that made our team successful was his basketball IQ. He was a player that I relied on to have the ball in his hands and make decisions for what situation we were in. Often, he would come to me with ideas on how to attack defenses. They say that a point guard should be an extension of the coach on the floor. Jack truly was for our team.
Kevin Lynch, Walter Johnson High School Summer/Fall Assistant Coach
Jackson is one of the most talented kids that I have ever coached and I firmly believe that he would be an asset to your program. Jackson is a 6’1" point guard and here is how I would describe him:
Elite level basketball skill (has worked with a professional basketball trainer for many years)
High basketball IQ
Excellent ball handler who can easily handle defensive presses and traps
Always plays under control and makes the game look easy
Competitive – hates to lose
Hard worker
Leads by example Extremely coachable and will be a coach on the floor for the team
Team first guy – makes others better
Excellent free throw shooter – will easily shoot 80% or better
Can score from any place on the floor
Very good 3 point shooter
Has mastered the mid-range jump shot
Strong and athletic

Tyler Weader, Performance Director, Power Train
Jackson Van Wagener has been the perfect example of an athlete that is never willing to settle for anything less than the best he or she can be. Over the past year, Jackson has been training with Power Train 2-3x per week with the overall goals of increasing strength, athleticism, and size for his basketball career. During each session Jackson gives his best effort, working alongside our coaches to execute every exercise and drill with perfect form and intensity. Jackson is one of those athletes who will push each set to muscular failure if we let him. This work ethic has lead to Jackson seeing great success in adding 15lbs of muscle and increasing his strength across the board... After suffering his ACL injury, Jackson never quit. We worked around his injury and focused on core and upper body strength while keeping the intensity high! During the COVID-19 Maryland shutdown, Jackson completed 3x/week online custom training programs at home with his own equipment. He even asked us to train him via Zoom 2-3x per week, to which we happily obliged. Jackson could have easily lost all of his progress and taken a few months off - but we knew he would never do that... Finally, we never had to worry about inconsistency with Jackson. He stayed on top of his training schedule and rarely ever missed a session. I know this commitment to a schedule will serve him well in college where he will have to juggle classes, basketball, studying, his personal life, and much more.

My overall approach is keep the game simple, distribute the ball, and create the easiest shot possible. This is how I've been taught to play since 3rd grade. My style of play may not make SportsCenter highlights, but it wins games. It doesn't matter to me how many points I score as long as we get the W. I do value my assist-to-turnover ratio because that means I'm giving my team scoring opportunities, and I'm taking care of the ball.
Communicate with teammates and coach constantly
Value every possession and control the tempo of the game
Create scoring opportunities for my teammates by understanding their strengths and weaknesses
Distribute the ball and get it in the hands of teammate with the best scoring chance on each possession
Take care of the ball and minimize turnovers, especially against the press
Know where everyone is on the court at all times, including the defense, and look for our open guy
Use motion offense as an equalizer against bigger, faster, more talented teams
Make good, high percentage shot selections and be ready to shoot.
Know when to shoot and when to make the extra pass.
Look for mismatches to take advantage of by observing our opponent’s strengths and weaknesses
Play solid help defense, be active, and get back on defense quickly
Look for moments when the defense is disorganized in transition to take advantage
Manage the clock based on the score, and always know time and possession, especially towards the end of the game
Play aggressive, but smart
Move the ball quickly, encourage good floor spacing, and move off the ball
Think a couple plays ahead and know what I plan to do next before I get the ball (but be able to adjust if needed)
Always keep my head up since the fastest way to advance the ball is by passing
Look for the outlet pass in transition
The "hockey" assist (the pass that leads to the pass that leads to the shot) is as critical as a regular assist or scoring
Dribble with purpose, and don't dribble the air out of the ball or pick-up your dribble too early
See the court, be patient, and most importantly, keep things simple
I got a compound fracture in my right forearm while going up to block a shot during practice in 7th grade.
Needed a metal plate implanted to help it heal.
Wore a cast for 10-weeks and didn't miss a practice or game (to cheer on my team) except for the few days I was in the hospital for surgery.
Got much better at dribbling, passing, finishing, and shooting with my left hand!
Tore my left ACL and meniscus during second game of sophomore high school season in December 2019
Because the growth plate in my knee was still wide open, surgeon recommended I wait until it closed a little more to prevent any damage to my future growth. Then COVID happened, and my surgery got delayed more since it was non-urgent.
Surgeon said if I wanted to only swim and not play basketball anymore, I wouldn't need to have the surgery. But no chance I wanted to give-up basketball.
Had my ACL reconstruction seven months post-injury on July 14, 2020 and rehab was tough but went great. My PT doc Tim Bifulco says my hard work is paying off.
Missed my junior year season due to rehab. But I'm excited to be past surgery and worked hard to come back stronger than before injury.
Took the time to focus on the things I can control - building strength, making sure my knee is healthy, and my academics.
Cleared on 5/11/21 to return to play with no restrictions!
Was named to MD Elite 2021 Summer League Second Team in my first season back playing full minutes with no restrictions.
Follow my rehab on Twitter @Jack_VanWagener.
I swam competitively year-round with USA Swimming from 2nd - 7th grade, practicing 12+ hours per week, including 6am practices in middle school.
Hold several team records for my former club team Tollefson Swimming.
Also hold several relay team records with my summer team the Wildwood Wombats. Helped set a new team record in medley relay on 6/19/21, and we broke it again on 7/24/21, which also beat the county league record for this relay.
Qualified for USA Swimming Eastern Zone Championships, PV Junior Olympics, MD State LC Championships, Montgomery County Swim League Coaches' Long Course and All-Stars several years in a row.
Achieved USA Swimming AAA times (top 6% in the country) for my age group in freestyle, backstroke, butterfly, and individual medley events.
I'm a sprinter and enjoy the faster, shorter events. But I challenged myself to train for the 400IM, which took me way outside my comfort zone. Here's video of me (dark blue cap) racing it for the first time against older swimmers.
Retired from year-round swimming in 7th grade to focus on basketball, but I continue to compete with my summer team in the top division of a league with 90 teams that has produced several olympic swimmers, including Katie Ledecky. If swimming wasn't a winter sport that conflicts with basketball, I would've loved to swim for my high school as well.
Swam for first time in two years in June 2021 due to the Pandemic and ACL and was able to get 16th fastest butterfly time in the county. Qualified to swim with the top 16 swimmers in the 50 butterfly at league all-stars. I was seeded 16th and finished 11th with a personal best time of 27.08, which is .82 seconds behind our team record. I've got one more year to go for that record!
Physical Work
500 made-shots 2 - 4x a week depending on schoolwork and game schedule.
Practice shots include off the catch, off the dribble, and 3-pointers
Some days, a late start means shooting into the evening to make 500
Ball handling practice daily
Since ACL surgery on 7/14/20, PT with Rehab2Perform 2 - 3x a week focusing on range of motion, mobility, and lower body strength. Completed rehab on 5/11/21.
Strength training with Power Train 3x week.
Individual workouts with Brad Pinchback Basketball and Pat the Roc Basketball Academy bi-weekly.
Attended PGC Scoring College at University of Scranton in July 2021.

I love the game and feel the most at home when I'm on the court.
I love being part of a team.
I love to compete, and win.
Basketball is what I feel like I know and do better than anything else in my life.
I've been playing for over 10 years and can't imagine my life without basketball - even after two serious injuries. I've known since 3rd grade that it takes a team to win a championship, and I hope to find a college team that I can help them to win one. I'm excited to be healthy and back on the court, and looking forward to my senior year season. My focus includes finding the best competition possible to play against, continue getting stronger, and hone my defensive skills. And of course, constantly work on my ball handling, footwork, and shooting. I really appreciate the coaches I've had over the years that have taught me so much about the game and life. And I'm so grateful to my parents for supporting me, driving me to every practice, and watching every game. And thank you to my mom for helping me create this website.
Thank you for taking the time to learn more about me!
