As a social studies teacher will strive to give my students the knowledge that they need to understand the world around them. I will have those difficult conversations with them, those other teachers are scared to have. I will create lessons that pique the interest of my students, to ensure they are always staying curious. My classroom will be a place where students will fall in love with social studies, and constantly be asking questions. It is an environment where the students and I are on a journey to learn more together.
My name is Jackie Nathan, and I want to be a 3rd-grade social studies teacher. I have known that I wanted to be a teacher since I was little, and I have been in the classroom for as long as I can remember. My mom is a first-grade teacher, so I have been helping out in her classroom since I was in middle school. I tend to gravitate towards the younger grades, anywhere between first and 4th grade, however, my ideal grade to teach would-be third grade.
Lesson Plans that will be used during my teaching
Social studies is taught to prepare students to identify, understand, and work to solve the challenges facing our diverse nation in an increasingly interdependent world. Education for citizenship should help students acquire and learn to use the skills, knowledge, and attitudes that will prepare them to be competent and responsible citizens throughout their lives.
Social Studies for a Better World
"To build a better world, we have to teach students to evaluate the status quo and dream up alternatives. Thinking like economists is essential to this project, especially when it comes to considering how we are all connected." (Page 11)
Throughout the course, we talked about the difficult conversations that come up in the social studies classroom. And the importance of navigating those conversations with your students.
In the course discussions, we talked about how while following the curriculum is important, it is also important to gear your lessons towards the interest of your students. If your students are not excited and eager to learn about social studies, then they are not going to be engaged in your lessons.
