The Importance of Empathy and Social Justice in the Practice of Hoʻoponopono
Malina Kaulukukui, MSW
C. Malina Kaulukukui, MSW, retired from the Myron B. Thompson School of Social Work, University of Hawai`i at Mānoa in 2015, where she focused on behavioral health and cultural programming for MSW students. She currently assists the University of Hawai’iʻs John A. Burns School of Medicineʻs Native Hawaiian Center of Excellence develop and implement cultural immersion programs for medical students and residents. She also teaches the traditional cultural practice of ho’oponopono (often described as “family therapy, Hawaiian-style”) to others who want to carry on the practice in the methodology of Mary Kawena Pukui, who mentored Lynette Paglinawan, who in turn graduated Kumu Malina after several years of training. Kumu Malina has been dancing hula all of her adult life and is a respected kumu hula, a hula teacher. Since her retirement, she has been teaching hula at the womenʻs jail, using her professional background in substance abuse treatment and trauma-informed care to help inmates embrace hula as a cultural “tool” to effect healing.

Keynote Speaker: Sheldon Riklon, MD
Dr. Riklon is the Peter O. Kohler, M.D., Endowed Distinguished Professor in Health Disparities and an associate professor in the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine. He is one of only two Marshallese physicians to complete medical school and residency training from U.S.-accredited programs. Riklon trains residents in the Family Medicine Clinic on the UAMS Northwest Regional Campus and sees patients at the Community Clinic in Springdale, offering culturally appropriate care to the clinic’s Marshallese patients. Riklon earned his bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Hawaii at Hilo and his medical degree from the John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. He joined UAMS in 2016 from the John A. Burns School of Medicine, where he was an assistant professor and the family medicine clerkship director in the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health.
