The Meiji period or Meiji era is the period of Japanese history from 1868 to 1912. It followed the Edo period. Meiji means "Enlightened Rule" or "Enlightened Government".
When the Meiji era began, the rule of the Tokugawa shogunate ended, and the Emperor Meiji (めいじてんのう) was reinstated as the head of the government. The Meiji Emperor, Mutsuhito, was only 15 when he ascended the throne. During his reign Japan underwent great political, social and industrial changes and became a world power.
This return to an emperor-ruled government is referred to as the Meiji Ishin (めいじいしん) in Japanese, and the Meiji Restoration or Meiji Revolution in English.
The Satsuma Rebellion, also known as the Seinan War (せいなんせんそう)was a revolt of disaffected samurai against the new imperial government led by Saigou Takamori(さいごうたかもり) occurred in 1877. The rebellion ended the samurai class. Saigou Takamori is considered Japan’s last samurai.
