Department of Mechanical Engineering

National Institute of Technology Durgapur

Short Bio:  Jayabrata graduated from NIT Durgapur (Mechanical Engineering batch 2007-11) and thereafter pursued a Joint Masters-PhD Degree and graduated from IIT Kharagpur in 2017. His doctoral research focused on the dynamics of complex electrorheological (ER) fluids in micro-confinements. Specifically, he studied how electrical double layers can be exploited to activate and modulate the rheological complexity and flow structures of ER fluids in narrow conduits. Thereafter, Jayabrata joined the University of Rennes 1 (DIMENV Group) as a postdoc to study the mechanism of carbon dioxide sequestration through a porous medium using experiments and numerical simulation. Jayabrata later on associated himself with the Physics of Living Matter Group at the University of Luxembourg where he joined as a HFSP Cross-Disciplinary fellow in November 2019. His latest research involves the use of a combination of physical and biological approaches to decode the underlying physics of the transition of bacterial colonies to biofilms, and the ecology of bloom forming phytoplankton under nutrient stress conditions- common observable in a warming climate. As an academician, he started his teaching career as an Assistant Professor at BITS Pilani, Hyderabad Campus in 2022. Presently, he is an Assistant Professor at NIT Durgapur in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
