Diffusion of Women’s Political Empowerment: Dynamic spatial panel data
This study examines spillovers in the diffusion of Women's Political Empowerment (WPE) across 142 countries between 1965 and 2023. Using a dynamic spatial panel data model that incorporates common factors, we control for the possibility that cross-country spillovers are due to shared exogenous shocks or common factors, rather than direct interdependencies. To better capture spatial relationships, we employ a hybrid matrix of spatial weights that combines various measures of proximity beyond geographic distance, thus reflecting the complex drivers of WPE diffusion. Our results indicate that WPE in one country has a positive and statistically significant influence on its neighbors. A spatial Bayesian model averaging approach (SBMA) is used to identify the most appropiate spatial model for the data. Finally, we explore transmission heterogeneity through a spatially heterogeneous dynamic spatial panel.
