Title: Semantic-aware Information-Centric Networking for Edge-Hosted Digital Twins
Keynote speaker: Marica Amadeo (University of Messina, Italy)
Abstract: The advent of 6G will drive the deployment of Digital Twins as interconnected, intelligent replicas of physical entities, capable of supporting a variety of services across application domains such as smart vehicles and smart cities.
Meeting the stringent latency, scalability, and adaptability requirements of these services requires pushing computation into the network itself, thereby embracing the in-network computing paradigm at the edge.
This keynote explores how Information-Centric Networking (ICN), with its location-independent, name-based communication model and native in-network caching, offers a natural foundation for in-network DT operations. We focus on a scenario in which DTs are hosted on physical edge nodes and act as service consumers and producers by leveraging ICN’s name-based primitives, and present a semantic-aware service discovery mechanism integrated into the ICN forwarding fabric to further improve service provisioning within DT Networks (DTNs).
Two representative case studies will be discussed. The first focuses on Intelligent Transportation Systems, where Road Digital Twins collect data from moving vehicles, enabling robust vehicular crowdsensing. The second addresses service provisioning among smart city DTs, where semantic-aware ICN supports the discovery and reuse of cached service results, reducing both provisioning latency and redundant computation.
Through these examples, we highlight how this semantic-driven in-network computing approach enables flexible and efficient DT operations, demonstrating its potential as a cornerstone of future 6G networks, where the network itself becomes an active computing substrate, seamlessly fusing communication, caching, and computation.
