The 3rd Workshop on Integrated Wireless Networking and Computing (IWNC) aims to bring together researchers and practitioners working at the intersection of advanced wireless communication and network-centric computing. As modern wireless networks, such as IoT, Wi-Fi, and 5G/6G, grow in scale and complexity, new challenges emerge in their design, optimization, and operation. Addressing these challenges increasingly requires integrated approaches that combine communication protocols with intelligent computing capabilities, both at the edge and within the network itself.
Modern network evolution is heavily driven by AI/ML-driven optimization and advanced cross-layer, cross-domain design approaches that enable intelligent automation and structural adaptability. By pivoting toward programmable wireless networks, smart NICs, and In-Network Computing architectures, today's infrastructure does not just transfer data but introduces native processing capabilities. This is evident in the joint design of communication and computation functions, which actively accelerates distributed AI workloads like Federated Learning.
To manage this complex ecosystem, modern frameworks rely on highly sophisticated orchestration and deployment paradigms spanning across the entire network fabric, providing unified control plane, core, and Radio Access Network (RAN) solutions. Technologies like Open RAN (O-RAN) and Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) are central to this shift, offering standardized orchestration solutions that dismantle vendor lock-in and push intelligence to the network edge.
Furthermore, modern wireless networks must ensure resilience, scalability, and adaptability without sacrificing environmental goals, pushing for the rise of energy-aware, sustainable architectures. Ultimately, the success of this integration hinges on robust security frameworks, capable of safeguarding communication confidentiality and preventing data leakage across the edge computing ecosystem.
