I began working with clay in school - I always enjoyed art but when given the chance to do ceramics, I felt very much at home. I continued to A Level, and then carried on independently into my early twenties.Â
I moved to Bristol around the start of the millenium as I saw an advert for reasonably priced studio space. I had no knowledge of the town, but took a train, loved the studio (a big falling down barn-style building hidden behind some terraced housing) and immediately put down a deposit for one desk's worth of space, and also for the first cheap rentable room I found nearby. Little did I know that this area - a square mile around Gloucester Rd - would become my home for the next twenty five years.
I loved being a full (or nearly full) time maker, and enjoyed seeing the sales and commissions coming in. I also started to take on some teaching work to provide a more regular income, eventually working with excluded children in a Pupil Referral Unit. From there, I enrolled on a PGCE course and became a full time English teacher, and then a Head of Year and Department. This meant my time as a maker came to an end - there was no time or headspace left for much else.
After around 20 years in education, I made the decision to leave, and took an office job. This huge shift felt transformational. I now have space, time, and energy to return to my first love, and have begun to make again. I am enjoying rediscovering old shapes and pairing them with wholly new ones, as well as playing with new glazes.
