I believe as a leader it is my number one responsibility to assure that everyone’s perspectives are heard and that change is constantly evolving. Growing up, I used to believe that leadership simply meant leading a team of people in completing a task no matter what it took to do so. However, as I have grown in my awareness of the world and have begun to notice diversity through a clearer lens, I have come to understand that as a leader it is my job to encompass the backgrounds of others through my work. It is important for me to enhance the experience of everyone involved by truly listening and embracing everyone's perspectives.
When leading a group of people, I embody the idea of “we”, not “I”. I am a strong believer that the most successful outcomes blossom from the work of a team opposed to a single individual. Therefore, it is a leaders job to rise, take initiative, listen, and keep organized but it is not the leaders responsibility to overpower.
Change can mean completing a powerful project that is going to make a lasting difference or simply looking at the existing framework of an idea and considering how to constantly strengthen it. Key principles of leadership are ally ship, integrity, adaptability, and organization. I believe as a leader it is central to be constantly seeking growth in yourself, those you’re leading, and the task you’re completing.
