AAUP has been shaping American higher education since 1915, developing the standards and principles that maintain quality in education and academic freedom in US colleges and universities.

Membership
Step One: Join national and choose IU Indianapolis as your home campus and you become a member of the IU Indy chapter! Membership dues are assessed on a sliding scale. Note that the IU Indianapolis chapter does not charge additional dues, once you join National you get your local chapter for free! Go to https://www.aaup.org/join to learn more.

Who can join? Anyone whose professional appointment involves teaching and/or research, including contingent faculty, tenured and tenure-track faculty, graduate-student employees, academic specialists, postdoctoral fellows who are primarily teachers or researchers, librarians, archivists, curators, and technicians who participate substantially in the process of teaching or research.

As we build our chapter we are looking to fill the following committees! Please contact the executive committee at iuindyaaup at gmail.com if you are interested in joining any of these committees.
The Membership Committee shall regularly recruit new members and encourage the maintenance of membership. Working with the Treasurer and other applicable chapter officers, the committee shall promote the establishment of a dues deduction plan and other appropriate plans to encourage membership recruitment and maintenance.
Chapter Organization Committee shall develop and oversee the process of holding chapter elections, collecting dues, and maintaining chapter organization. Working with the Membership Committee and the Executive Committee, the committee shall determine the process for holding regular elections for the chapter that ensures input from all members. Working with the Membership Committee and Treasurer, the committee shall assess what chapter dues are reasonable and appropriate for the chapter. In short - this committee helps to establish the nuts and bolts of how the chapter operates!
The Academic Freedom & Tenure Committee shall promote the principles of academic freedom and tenure through the development of policy documents and reports relating to these subjects and the application of those principles to particular situations brought to its attention. The committee shall investigate complaints of departures from these standards where appropriate. These cases may lead to recommendations from the committee to the Executive Committee.
The Faculty Participation in University Governance Committee shall promote meaningful faculty participation in institutional governance through the development of policy documents and reports related to shared governance and application of those principles to particular situations brought to its attention. The committee shall investigate complaints of departures from these standards where appropriate. These cases may lead to recommendations from the committee to the Executive Committee.
The Economic Status of the Profession Committee shall promote the economic well-being of the profession through the development of policy documents and reports related to shared governance and application of those principles to particular situations brought to its attention. The committee shall investigate complaints of departures from these standards where appropriate. These cases may lead to recommendations from the committee to the Executive Committee.
The Communications & Outreach Committee shall promote meaningful communication within the chapter as well as outreach to other relevant groups such as students, alumni, and the general public. Working with the Secretary and other applicable chapter officers, this committee shall develop best practices for establishing communications within the chapter with input, providing recommendations on document sharing, meeting spaces and platforms, and newsletters or other internal communications. The committee shall also develop best practices for outreach, providing recommendations on effective letter-writing campaigns, op-eds, social media use, podcasts, and other outside communications.
The Coordinating Committee shall promote the meaningful communication between other IU chapters, state-wide conference, and national level AAUP. This committee shall coordinate with other chapters and AAUP entities to facilitate attending their meetings as well as inviting them to attend our meetings. The committee shall send a member to attend these outside meetings and provide reports to the Indianapolis chapter on relevant information shared in those meetings.
The executive committee shall consist of the elected officers of the chapter, the immediate past president, and two members elected at large. The majority of the executive committee shall constitute a quorum for conduct of business of the committee. The executive committee shall assume responsibility for the chapter's continuing effective presence at the institution, keeping all positions on the executive committee filled as vacancies occur. Note: To revive our chapter the current Executive Committee will serve as interim until the establishment of an official election in Spring 2025.
