Anti-Racism & Our Classroom
The success of our classroom community is contingent upon the strength of our collective commitment to an anti-racist agenda. As such, we will co-create an environment that values every individual and celebrates a community made of multicultural perspectives, identities, stories, and voices. We will ground our practices in empathy, compassion, collaboration, and community. We will exercise our responsibility to confront and dismantle personal and institutional biases and structures that aim to silence, oppress, and erase and which have left a legacy of lasting harm. In their wake, we will create safe spaces to explore race, class, gender, and sexual orientation. We will strive to create a community in which each of us feels seen, heard, valued, represented and respected. The goal of such work, as noted by writer and anti-racist educator Felicia Chavez, “is to radically reorient [the classroom] away from a white supremacist arena of individualism and rivalry into a supportive, multicultural collective of [artists] with voice” (Chavez, 2020).
