The Institute of Theology, Awka was established by the Church Missionary Society (CMS) in 1904. The aim behind the establishment of the College was to produce personnel who would preach the Gospel within the context of the culture, the tradition and the ethics of Nigerians. It is also to be noted that not only Church workers were produced, but different categories of people such as teachers and clerks were also trained here.
The goal of the Institute of Theology, Awka is to nurture and produce well–educated and effective citizenry and ministers with high moral and ethical standards, patriotism and added emphasis on Christian values. The programmes of the Institute emphasize the socio–cultural and technological needs of Nigeria, the dignity of work and of the individual.
Philosophy
The Institute of Theology holds that theological enquiry is essentially needful for understanding of the Christian God, His Creation, salvific and transformational purpose in the world and that this is best achieved through a credible and intentional theological content and process of enquiry which places premium on 'Formation' than 'EDUCATION.
Mission
Pursuant to the above, we strive to produce ministers with moral, spiritual, academic and social competence needed for meaningful life-style and transformation of our society.
Vision
Formation of priests and teachers with competence for effective ministry in the Church and Nation.

On 17th July 2020 we commissioned twenty-nine (29) Bachelor of Theology of Religion Graduates, Eight (8) Diploma in Theology Graduates and four (4) Certificate in Theology Graduates in a brief but soul-lifting service at the Chapel of the Holy Spirit.
We have formalized Affiliation with Paul University for the award of Bachelor in Religion to our Postulants alongside the B.Th. Degree awarded by the Institute. The MOU have been signed.
Re-roofed, through the efforts of past Postulants Government, the owner of Dozzy Oil, Dr. Sir Daniel Chukwudozie (Akudo) has reroofed and renovated the Dining Hall and reroofed the Hostels.
From the 2020/2021 Academic Sessions owing to several appeals by the Postulants and request of the Pauline Bishops we have reverted to Postulants Communal Feeding properly supervised by the Institute’s Management.
As part of our Survival Ventures, the Institute embarked on Sandwich/Remedial Programmes to help our past students and others to upgrade their Academic Qualifications, and now we also have started Post-Graduate Studies of which the first batch would soon graduate. As stated above, we have Affiliated to Ajayi Crowther University for it for the Post-Graduate Studies.
We have produced two Building Plans of 6 flats with 3 bedroom apartments for the erection of a befitting Staff residence and are soliciting for good spirited individuals and groups to enable us achieve the venture.
The Superannuation Fund Management Committee has formalized actions to erect two Hostels within Paul University of which one would be for the Postulants. Work has started on the one for the Institute of Theology.
We now have a functional library in the Institute, and recently entered into a memorandum of understanding with CRGC (Centre for Research on Global Christianity) who has shifted ten thousand books dealing on various theological, social, philosophical and above all spiritually motivating to our Library.
The Postulants Government in the bid for the Communal Feeding, which we have restored, repainted the Dining Hall and built comfortable long forms and tables for eating of their meals.
Equally, Postulants’ Chaplaincy have just finished painting the Nwawka Main Hall for their chapel worship and other activities.
We have a functional ICT Unit manned by a specialist. This is a move to equip the postulants with the necessary digital skills they need to possess in this 21st century as digital priests. Thus the ICT Department under the care of Rev. Godwin I. Okonkwo has enabled the Institute to:
Have a compulsory general course titled Digital Evangelism which is designed to equip the postulants with the necessary internet and social media skills needed to spread the gospel to the internet community.
Launch our online classes necessitated by the Covid-19 Pandemic which has greatly helped us carry along our students while apart. This online study we have made to remain from now onward.
Build a digital structure of the entire Institute whereby each student has a cloud space to host his files and documents- results, transcripts, reports, etc. and same will be made available confidentially. Also, a student report box is created and will be made available to dioceses sending their candidates to our Institute for up to date report of the students’ performance in the school.
Develop an electronic attendance system both in class and during exams to properly checkmate attendance to classes using the Quick Reference Code (QR Code) Technology. The attendance report could also be made available to their dioceses on request.
Make internet connection available to all staff and students while at school and also at the students hostels and refectory to keep them hooked up to the international theological community for further research and studies.
Make the students results available online and to their individual Dioceses on request. This also generates the transcript automatically at entering the last semester's result.
Developed a Mobile Application for Result Checking.
