The statue was hollow cast by means of the indirect lost wax method. As was characteristic in antiquity, the sculpture was made in several different sections that were then welded together: head, body, genitals, arms above the gloves, forearms, left leg, and the middle toes. The top of the head was restored in antiquity. Repairs to bronze statues must have been relatively common, although not very many major ancient restorations are preserved today. The bronze statue of Sleeping Eros in the Metropolitan's collection (see fig. 8) has a large restored section of drapery between the legs, and, like the Boxer at Rest, which clearly had a long history in antiquity, the repair may have been done long after the statue was first created. Although the inset eyes of the Boxer at Rest are missing, they would have been convincingly rendered, like a pair in the Metropolitan's collection (fig. 11). The statue is remarkable for its extensive use of copper inlays, especially for the wounds to the boxer's head and the drips of blood on the right thigh and arm, as well as the lips, nipples, and the straps and stitching of the boxing gloves.[9] Of particular note is the bruise under the right eye, which was cast with a different alloy to give it a darker color. Extensive cold working of the statue, especially the hair, was done as part of the finishing process. The stone base is modern but it is probably a close approximation of what the ancient base looked like. Originally, the use of stone would have added to the realistic effect so powerfully rendered in the bronze.

After 18 months abroad, Rubens had had enough of the thankless task of politicking. He returned to Antwerp to see his children and to look after his domestic affairs. He could also dedicate himself entirely to painting. One of his most important patrons in the 1630s was King Philip IV of Spain who commissioned over 80 paintings.

In 1630, at the age of 53, Rubens married again. To everyone's surprise he did not marry into the nobility, but chose Hlne Fourment, the 16 year-old daughter of a respectable merchant family. Rubens was clearly bowled over by his new wife with whom he had five children, and she figures in numerous portraits, including a version of 'The Judgement of Paris' in which she appears as Venus.

During his last years Rubens spent increasing amounts of time with his new young family in his country house, the Chateau de Steen. He began to paint more landscapes, often for his own enjoyment, rather than for sale.

Having suffered painfully from gout for several years, in 1639 a particularly bad attack left Rubens unable to paint and he died a few months later in May 1640.

Hi Kate, I am in the planning stages for my family of 4 to visit Italy for the first time. We are looking at 10 days. Want to at least stay in Venice 2 days. I wanted to fly into Venice is it Marco Polo airport? Is there the vaporetto/water taxi near the airport? want to make it as simple as possible since we will have luggage. We want to stay in Rome for 3 days, and try and do a day trip to Florence/Pisa, is that even possible? Or should we leave Venice and stay in Florence then do a day trip to Pisa. Then head to Rome. I am looking at a tour from Rome to Amalfi Coast/Pompeii then they drop us off in Sorento at our hotel, where we will stay for 2 nights. Hoping to fly out of Naples back home to NJ. Not afraid of the traveling from place to place. We did that when we took a trip to Scotland. Definitely want to hit all those spots I mentioned. Any advice you can give will be greatly apricated. Thank you Laurie

The rest of the year, the green-fingered people of Vicenza turn their balconies into veritable hanging gardens and it is always a pleasure to walk around town while looking up to admire the colourful blooms streaming down the facades of centuries-old buildings.

Health insurance is mandatory for all international students and expats in Italy. Students participating in a study abroad program of any duration are required to have international health insurance, usually included in the program costs and provided by your academic institution or program provider. If you are traveling independently, research international options available to you within your current health care provider. You can also look into international health insurance companies that provide various plans and choose one that best suits the type and duration of your travels in Italy.

Of all the differing watercrafts in Venice, the gondola is the most well-known. It is an ancient row boat, evolving over the last 1,000 years to become the sleek, graceful shape you see today. Its unique, asymmetrical design allows just one oarsman to navigate the narrow Venetian waterways using a single oar.Brief History of the Gondola1094A boat called a gondola is mentioned in a letter from a Venetian Republic official.1490sGondolas appear in Italian paintings by Carpaccio and Bellini. Interestingly, the manner of rowing depicted is the same as that used by gondoliers today.1500sGondolas are fashioned with the ornate ornamentation popular in the Baroque period. In addition to the fanciful ironwork, gondola design also takes on a broader stern and an increase in rocker at the boat's bottom, improving its position in the water and the gondolier's steering position. There are also stories of the gondola proving its seaworthiness by being rowed into battle on the Adriatic Sea.1600sGondola popularity soars, with an estimated 10,000 gondolas being rowed around Venice.1768A precise architectural drawing of a gondola is created by a naval artist. From this work we know that the 18th century gondola has almost the same dimensions as the gondolas we row today, except the design is still symmetrical.end of the 1800sThe element of asymmetry is brought to the gondola design, making the boat perfect in the eyes of gondoliers. Unfortunately, at the same time the gondola reaches perfection, steam-powered boats reach the waterways of Venice. The usage of gondolas begins to decline.2000John Kerschbaum brings his first authentic gondola to the waters of Stillwater, Minnesota.2001Gondola Romantica/Gondola on St. Croix begins to row lovers along the St. Croix River in Stillwater.2001+The romantic, historic experience of a gondola cruise continues in the Midwest, far from the Venetian waterways of Italy. How to Find UsWhere to Find UsOn the Stillwater Dock:
