Illinois State University Climbing Club is a close-knit community that invites members to participate in both indoor and outdoor climbing. In this club you will expect to see climbing at the ISU wall located in the Redbird Rec (Student Fitness Center), as well as neighboring locations like The Proving Ground, Upper Limits Bloomington, and occasionally First Ascent Peoria. We meet on Wednesdays at 6:30 pm at the Student Fitness Center and then other gyms on Fridays. Throughout the school year the club organizes 3 trips to outdoor climbing areas: Jackson Falls in the Shawnee National Forest in the fall and spring and to Red River Gorge in Kentucky during the first part of spring break. This club is all about growing a welcoming community for anyone interested in climbing.
If you are interested, send an email to climbingclub9@gmail.com with your name and phone number and someone can add you to our GroupMe chat. Here we can easily update our members on events and plans, create group chats, and keep things organized with our large member list.
Another aspect of Climbing Club is Climbing Team. Tryouts and dues are required for this subgroup of club. Team will represent Illinois State University under the USA Climbing Collegiate Heartland Division. Practices, competitions, and pushing yourself and your teammates to your limits in climbing are all amazing aspects of being on Climbing Team. If interested, please email climbingteam9@gmail.com with your name, ISU email, and phone number so the team captain can contact you.
We meet on Wednesday nights at 6:30 pm at the climbing area in the Redbird Rec. We top-rope climb, boulder, and talk and hang out each week. Important announcements are made at the beginning of the meeting, and then it is just free time to climb and hang out with other club members.
On Fridays, we climb at the local climbing gyms in the area. Upper Limits in Bloomington offers mostly top rope and lead climbing as well as indoor and outdoor bouldering. The Proving Ground (TPG) offers indoor bouldering as well as a kilter board and workout area. Occasionally we will go to First Ascent in Peoria and Urbana Boulders in Urbana.
We go camping at Jackson Falls in the Shawnee National Forest in Southern Illinois. We go over a weekend (leave Friday, come back Sunday) once in the fall semester in September or October and once in the spring semester in April. Jackson Falls offers a variety of outdoor climbing. Our club lead climbs, top rope climbs, and boulders while there. We provide breakfast foods and dinner for some of the meals over the weekend. Our club members go on personal trips throughout the school year as well.
We go to Red River Gorge in Kentucky, or "The Red" during the first part of spring break. The trip runs from Saturday (right after classes end) to Wednesday. (leave Saturday and travel back to IL on Wednesday) The Red offers a variety of outdoor climbing in Muir Valley, PMRP, and many other areas. We rent a house in the area for everyone to stay at night and break into groups during the day so everyone has a chance to climb.
Climbing team competes in the USA Climbing Collegiate Heartland Division. They will represent Illinois State University at competitions. Tryouts are Friday, August 30th at Upper Limits in Bloomington, IL.
